Barbie's Tryin' Something New (again)

I love the compound cuts, just never understood it. Decided to take the plunge. So, here is the first attempts at it, with the scroll saw. The snowman and bell were my first attempts, with the ones in the other picture coming next. (The monogram ornament was a nightmare - it was my 2nd or 3rd pattern I tried. I have to get that one down-pat; I want to do it for a present for my co-worker.)

Just before Thanksgiving, one of my structural guys made up a jig for me that I found at Steve Good's page. Loved this jig, just a bit too short. Left me for wanting, since I could barely get a 6" pc of 2x2 in there (don't dare mention 6" wood, no telling the comments I'd get...) ANYWAY, my friend "Dr." Bob (I call him) made another jig for me; this one will hold an 8" 2x2, and even lopped off a bunch of scraps for me to practice with.

Still have a lot of sanding to be done, because I want the rounded areas rounded, not squared.

Ken has a bunch of those cones, and he bought some diamond files, too. I'll have to play a bit with the cones before I use them on the ornaments. I don't know how you're supposed to use them. The sanding I've done so far, I did with my dremel (the pen attachment) with sanding tubes to do the major shaping, and the fine detail by hand, and with a couple of Kens' diamond sanders. Ken helped get the face right on the shark... he did the mouth, and drilled the eye for me. Now I have to get him colored and waxed.

Be careful, cutting 3-D scroll saw items is a very slippery slope. It was almost straight down for me, and I very rarely cut anything else on my scroll saw now.

When making my little reindeer I found that if you use a small enough blade the cutting is slower, but sanding isn't necessary. Just a few swipes, usually with a fingernail file, sometimes trimmed to narrower widths is all that is necessary to smooth rough edges. Most of the surface of them is already smooth right out of the saw. I hate sanding, so spending a little more time cutting is worth it to me. I use a #1 or 1/0 R skip tooth Flying Dutchman (Nigua) blade most of the time for my little reindeer. I go to the 1/0 when cutting the really small ones. Most become ear rings. The pattern that I use for these is from www.woodgears.ca, but I cleaned it up a bit and then sized it to suit. Then used Photoshop to place as many copies as possible on a sheet of paper. It saves paper and printing costs. I have a divided file folder that I keep my sheets of patterns in, stored near my saw, and cut up a full sheet of them at a time.

I made some tote boxes a few years ago, that are stackable, so I can keep each pattern and the blocks in process together, each in their own tote. The stack of totes is kept near the scroll saw with the tote containing the pattern being cut on the top of the stack. These were originally built when I was doing demonstrations and training at woodworking shows, but they sometimes got more attention than what I was demonstrating. They sure made keeping track of all of my "in process" patterns easy though.

Kind of a long story Dan My partner has been of sick for the past couple months, been at the Dr way way to much lately. PC crashed and been getting everything going again. For some reason my back up drive was corrupt and I couldn't do a system restore. My Linux pc was tied up as well ,I use it kind of like a dvr with plex. All I had was the phone for a while. I didn't have my user info for this site my bad. But I am back now. Hope all is well with everyone here.
