Aromatic Cedar Hinge Box.Jewelry Box
I was experimenting with wooden hinges and tried to make an all hinge box. The box corners, lid hinge, end handles and latch are all hinges. Here is what I came up with made out of a aromatic cedar board.
It has 2 hidden compartments, one inside under false bottom and one on the bottom, to stash the cash.

Very nice. Two questions:
Did you use a box/finger joint jig to get the spacing? and...
How did you drill the pin holes?

I used my homemade box joint jig,and at the time my new Incra Wooden Hinge boring jig.Cherryville Chuck wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 9:24 pm Very nice. Two questions:

The jig is set up for a #40 dia. bit for the pin, and I used that to drill a pilot hole ,then enlarged the hole to 1/8' for a wooden dowel pin.
Here are the pictures of the build.

Re: Aromatic Cedar Hinge Box.Jewelry Box
So you just have to pick a size that matches one of the 4 in the jig. Where would you find a #40 drill bit long enough to drill across all those pin holes? I have a 1/8" by 12" installers bit like you do but I don't know if they go any smaller than that. I made a drawer under my built in oven that is only about 2 to 2.5" deep and I put a hinged lid on it using wooden hinges but I took the cowardly way out by making individual teeth and gluing them to the carcass. That way I could drill each one separately.

Re: Aromatic Cedar Hinge Box.Jewelry Box
# 40 was the standard pilot bit for Boeing and I bought some long ones years ago at Boeing surplus. But a bit came with the kit and was the same for all diam. of hinges bushings.

Those are really unique boxes Herb. I like the look and definitely don't see it everyday.

Holy crap. These guys make bits up to 12 feet long. https://www.drillbitwarehouse.com/store ... drill-1-16
Their prices are quite reasonable. $3.02 for a 12" long 1/16" bit.

Re: Aromatic Cedar Hinge Box.Jewelry Box
That's taking "Hinge" to the extreme. So when there's nothing in it, can you hinge it flat and slide it into a low space, like under a bookshelf?
A very interesting box. I have one of the hinge jigs, but only used it twice so far, and definitely not to the extreme that you have. Just a few small hinges that I mortised into the lid and back edge of some boxes, as if they were metal hinges. Then glued them into place.
