Small Sliding Lid Boxes
Here are some small boxes I made for my brother, for his reloading supplies.
The first one is made of Alaskan Yellow Cedar, and the lower one is sycamore.

I love that sycamore grain. Yellow cedar is also known as cypress but I suspect different from the cypress that grows in southeastern swamps. I have a piece a cousin from the Island gave me.

Re: Small Sliding Lid Boxes
Cutting the thumb recess.
1. On the table saw, mark a vertical line on the fence @centerline of blade.
2.Tilt blade to around 15°
3.lower blade even w/top of table.
4. Move fence to 1/2" from tip of blade, and lock.
5. Mark the center of the lid, on back side.
6. Place the lid top down aligned with mark on fence to centerline mark on back of lid.
7.Start saw.
8.Slowly raise the blade 1/16"
9.shut off saw.
10. Remove lid, done.
Some saws are left tilt, some are right tilt, the fence has to be set accordingly so the tip of the tooth is pointed towards the fence.
The first box was cut with combination blade, the second one with a full width Dado set.
Do a trial run first to make sure set up is right.

Re: Small Sliding Lid Boxes
I love to work with Yellow cedar, it has a nice fragrance too. When I was young they built a lot of fishing trawlers out of it.Cherryville Chuck wrote: ↑Mon Feb 14, 2022 1:17 pm I love that sycamore grain. Re: Small Sliding Lid Boxes
A guy from north of Nanaimo told me once that the Japanese would pay huge money for a certain quality, size, length, etc of yellow cedar for something that went into their Shinto temples. According to him, what they were looking for was pretty rare and it had to be sawed a certain way if you found one that was good enough.
