First One
Been wanting to make one of these, but couldn't find a template anywhere. I finally went to YouTube, and found a video for one. The guy made his for three picks, I decided I only wanted two, so I could put a monogram or graphic or something in the lower corner.
A couple of problems: One: I used the wrong acoustic shape (whoops) and it's backwards, so I can't burn the guitar details on the top, because the top on this one is the bottom. (another "whoops") Ah well. It fits together nicely, and the pics fit beautifully. I think I'll use this one as the practice for flocking, and just put a nice graphic on the front. Also looking for the correct style of guitar to make a new template.

Re: First One
I made three templates: The first one was the outline of the original picture. The second one had to be smaller, so I took a 1/4" washer (I think it was) and traced inside the original, and cut that outline. The third template was for the pics. I used the second template, drew the outline on another piece of laminated mdf, and used my guitar pic for that template. Here's the picture of the three of them. The middle one is the original.
All three pieces of wood for the templates had to be exact in size, so when you stacked them, they would fit correctly. Especially that third one, since it's the pics. The real trick was after I glued the piece for the pics to it's base, and the other 1/4" piece to the outline for the cover. Those pieces also had to be the exact size of the templates, because the original template (large guitar outline) was placed over top of the four glued pieces, and the outline was traced on the stack of glued pieces and cut.
A mirror may "fix" that it's backwards, but if I burn the guitar graphics on the wrong one, it will still be upside down lol

Re: First One
Barb can you make a new pic center piece, and stand the one you glued up on edge and cut off the old one? then sand down the face flush and glue the new one to the back? Or just remake a new top and center and use the back you already have?

Re: First One
Question for Barb.
How do you price the things you make? do you figure the price of the material, your time, etc. Or do you just guess what an item would go for, or what similar items are priced at by other people?

Re: First One
Unfortunately no, Herb. I tried to redo the pick portion of the box, and failed miserably. Besides; it would probably snap if I tried to separate it. Not a big deal. I'll just make a generic design on the front, and the shape is wrong, too. So I have to go and make all new templates.Herb Stoops wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 11:50 pm Barb can you make a new pic center piece, and stand the one you glued up on edge and cut off the old one? then sand down the face flush and glue the new one to the back? Re: First One
I look at what others are charging, compare the craftsmanship to mine, and think about who will be looking at them. Different venues, different amount I can get for my stuff. My welcome signs start at $10.Herb Stoops wrote: ↑Tue Mar 01, 2022 2:37 pm Question for Barb.

So do you think that covers what it took to make it? When you make something do you make more than one, or just make one and see if it sells before making more of the same? I am just curious to how that works, I just give everything away that I make. To me it is just a hobby and I am flattered that someone might want and like something I have made.

Re: First One
The first picture is the shape I should have done (it matches my guitars) and the second picture is the shape I did.Cherryville Chuck wrote: ↑Wed Mar 02, 2022 10:11 am Nice work Barb but I don't understand why it's the wrong shape or backwards.
As for being backwards, I guess it isn't (looking at the picture...) I could have sworn that I saw the guitar was supposed to be the other way. Ah well. Good thing you made me look again. Now I can burn the guitar graphics on the front, instead of a generic graphic. Had it been backwards, in order for the guitar to be correct, the top of the box would be the base, and the base (the potion that holds the picks) would be the top.

Well, I don't charge for the time I spend creating the generic signs since most of the time, I guess I look at it as making money off playing around. (I like creating the designs, and watching them come to life on the wood.) Most (if not all) of my generic Welcome Signs are done on cedar dog ear fencing, and I was getting those at $3.48 for a six foot board. I can usually get six signs out of one board if I watch my spacing. $60 for a $3.50 investment in a board. Cutting them, I think it's somewhere between five and ten minutes each, depending on the graphic. I don't worry about charging for my time since to me, I'm making money off of my hobby-something I like to do; otherwise these items I make would sit around with no one to enjoy them, other than myself at my accomplishment of doing something without cutting off a finger or something. I'm more worried about what I have in expendable materials (paint, wood, poly, etc). On the Welcome Signs, the cost of material is 58 cents a sign, about 20 cents in the letter coloring, and pennies for the wintergreen oil. Same with paper for printing them. My bigger, custom signs start at $75 and go up depending on the font, graphics, size, and time involved. If it's smaller than a 1x10 I usually start those around $45 and price accordingly. My knick knacks, I look at the simplicity of the item, and what I have in materials for it, since again, I'm playing in the shop doing what I like to do, so as long as I make a decent profit above and beyond what I have in materials to be able to pay for my little addiction...
I make one item, put it out there to places like here to get an idea on what people think of it, and if it gets a really good rating (depending on what I made) I'll make up to five in different colors/styles. (That's Ken's idea. Make a few in different colors to appeal to a bigger audience.) That little face I cut for eye glasses? I can't keep the stupid thing in stock! I sell 'em for $10/pc and in different shades. With the increase in wood prices, I may have to raise the price to $12-$15/pc we'll have to see. I use a 1x4 I think for the face, and I use round and rectangle bases for them. I decided to integrate it into another plan I found on line, instead of a little hexagon glass holder, I'm going to use the little face I cut. We'll have to see how it goes. Only thing is, the wood for this other one is red oak (I think.) Not sure on pricing these, but I know it will be at least $20-$25 since the base is over 10" long, and I'm not using my light weight cedar.

Re: First One
Thanks for the explanation, Barb. I agree with your method, and the part about the satisfaction of doing something you like and also liking what you make from the feeling you get out of seeing the finished product, and not from how much you make on it monetarily,is the way I feel too. Another satisfaction for me is to try and do or make something that is different than any I have seen. That is why I don't usually make things from plans, I make them as I go and change them along the way so they are my creation.

Re: First One
I'm not one to make my own, but a lot of times I'll find something I like, but maybe I want it to look or function a bit different. The latest is this cat that "crawls up a wall"(or fence, as it's shown on line) with a sausage in his mouth. The sausage didn't quite go along with the cat. Then I saw someone else did a fish in the mouth, but the fish wasn't up to my standards, so I spent some time altering the pattern, and hopefully will get it printed at work tomorrow or Friday. My pattern (on the left) looks dotted because I copied it to paint and shrunk it, but my pattern lines have the same quality as the one on the right. You also can't see the teeth in the one on the left, but you can in the pattern. Shrinking it deteriorated the lines a bit.Herb Stoops wrote: ↑Wed Mar 02, 2022 3:31 pm Thanks for the explanation, Barb. OMG, those are hilarious, you could even make one with a rat or something else in its mouth.
I like that.
Do you wood burn them, paint in the figure,or carve the picture with a router?

These will be transferred to 1/2" ply, cut out with a combination of saws then painted. This is one of the pictures I found on the net of the cat with the sausage.Herb Stoops wrote: ↑Wed Mar 02, 2022 5:57 pm Do you wood burn them, paint in the figure,or carve the picture with a router?
