Dovetail Box
Some of you have seen this before. The trick to making a box that is dovetailed on all 6 sides. The trick is to cut the dovetails so the ends of the sides have pins ,this allows the ends to be slid straight onto the box.

Re: Dovetail Box
way cool Herb..
now to add a dovetailed inlay to all 6 sides...
have the inlays a much darker wood such as Ebony or Black Walnut...
or go another step and inlay the dark inlay so that it forms a border to say Beech or Birch...

Re: Dovetail Box
The box would have all the sides dovetails and the insert would be pins on all sides.

Re: Dovetail Box
The local specialty wood store has some ebony for sale. A mere $350 per board foot. They fortunately only count the black part and not the white outer part when they measure. I was thinking of asking if they would cut me off a few board inches.
Herb dovetailing 6 sides sounds incredibly tricky.

Re: Dovetail Box
That is beyond my pay grade.
I am still a beginner level. That must require on of those expensive jigs?

Re: Dovetail Box
Chuck, that amounts to $2.43/ sq. inch. But for 1/8" inlays, it might be OK.Cherryville Chuck wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 2:27 pmThe local specialty wood store has some ebony for sale. machine cut the tails as you normally would...
machine cut the shoulders which gives you the thickness of the tail you need.. router or TS...
hand cut the half blind sockets...
if you are shouldering the socked piece, cut the shoulder 1st...

Re: Dovetail Box
The reason I made that box was because an old Cabinet maker,(deceased) told me it couldn't be done and to forget about it.
I was thinking at the time of making my own coffin, and making it like that. If I left one end loose, they could just slide me in there and slam the end shut, with glue on it. Might keep the grave robbers from opening the coffin and stealing all my tools.

Re: Dovetail Box
Ha! alternately, we can order one of these or those to Stick or Herb, according to whether we want round teeth splined pins or pigeon-hole tails, and the box may also include a midget inside who sings the national anthem of a different country every time we open it !
These, compared to what I can make, make me think of turning from woodwork to sewage plumbing for a hobby !!!
Guys, some of us are mere mortals, and life is a continuous school, but we need to practice what we learn before we graduate in the end!
