Rustic Band Saw Boxes
These are my first attempts at Making band saw boxes. They aren't as purty as @sunnybob's but his are fine furniture, mine are rustic. They were from cut-offs of 4X12 Red Wood beams.

I agree. Not that rustic. It looks like you use a button or plugs to capture the wire in the hinges.

Re: Rustic Band Saw Boxes
That is the Rob Cosman hidden hinge tech. Lee valley used to have the leadless wood pencil dowels, I bought a dozen and use them for my wood hinge boxes. The hinge pin is 5/32" wood dowel full length.Cherryville Chuck wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 2:31 pm I agree. Not that rustic. It looks like you use a button or plugs to capture the wire in the hinges.

Re: Rustic Band Saw Boxes
To make that hinge, you take a 3/8" ball/bull nose router bit and make a 1/4 round recess cut in the back of the box. Then do the same with the lid, When they are put together it forms a 1/2 round groove.
Cut the dowels into equal lengths to match the length of the groove.
Thread the dowel pieces onto the pin dowel.
Mark in the groove the position of each dowel piece, and put a dab of glue on just the lower box groove, every other one.
Put the dowel in carefully so the glue only touches the dowels for the bottom. Put the lid on and clamp closed.
When the glue is dry, remove the lid and put a dab of glue carefully on the lid side of the lid dowels. Carefully locate the lid back in position and clamp. When the glue drys, open the lid.
I can't describe the joy in your heart if the lid opens and is not glued down to the bottom of the box.
These same dowels come with a reamer,(Extra Cost) that is the same pitch as a pencil sharpener for repair of screw holes.
You ream out the buggered screw holes and sharpen a dowel in the pencil sharpener and glue it into the holes. the hole in the center centers the replacement screw.
We used them a lot in hanging commercial doors when the Asian screws would twist off in the oak even with wax lub on them.

ROFL You don't want that, Stick. You'll have nightmares for months. You'll need therapy, and you'll never be able to unsee that vision! I won't be the one responsible for putting you through that.

Re: Rustic Band Saw Boxes
I have those too. Never used the leadless pencils yet. We don't have too many stripped out screws up here. If in doubt about the provided hardware we pre thread it with a Robertson and then back that out and try the Chinese provided screw. It it looks like we won't get the Chinese one to drive home we reverse it or twist it back out with vice grips and just use a Robertson. Provided we didn't just throw the Chinese one away to start with.Herb Stoops wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 4:10 pm

The plugger has other uses too. For example, if you wanted to make dots on the face of a burl clock for the hours you can use the plugger in a DP to drill exact match holes and then carve a wood that will contrast nicely to a near pencil shape and sharpen it in a pencil sharpener, put a tiny bit of glue in the hole (preferably fish glue since it wipes off completely with water) and then shave off flush after.

Re: Rustic Band Saw Boxes
That is a good idea Chuck. I have used the reamer and sharpened regular solid dowels for joinery, using butt joints, drill thru both the side and end, while they are clamped together and then put glue in hole, lightly tap in the pointed dowel then cut them off later.

Re: Rustic Band Saw Boxes
Then you will not be able to make them. The idea of band saw boxes to me is the freedom to make them any shape that comes to mind.it brings out creativeness, and originality, there are no limits. you can take a stick of fire wood and make a band saw box, and have it on the back porch with your spare key for the house hidden inside.

Herb, only just seen this thread. I make shapes, youve made character.
I've been away from boxes for most of the last year, got to get back to them now youve raised the stakes.
