Re: Vintage Planes
Then there are the vintage smoothing planes. Stop and think about it the old craftsman had to smooth their boards by hand in those times they couldn't go to HD and Lowes,or Manerds and buy a smooth piece, so the plane was a very important tool to the early woodworker.

Re: Vintage Planes
The plane family is interesting. The fronts and backs on each plane look to be joined by truss rods.

Re: Vintage Planes
I would say either one too. I don't know if I've seen handles like that on anything besides scraper type planes before. I won 6 more at our local online auction yesterday. One Sargent that is about a #6 and 2 Stanley #7s for metal planes. The other 3 are wooden. One with the metal insert and an old English coffin smoother size. 3rd Wooden one is a roundover profile plane. There will be a fair amount of time in the shop this winter restoring them. The 3 metal ones are in pretty good shape and won't need much done.

Re: Vintage Planes
I'm guessing that first one is a lost wax casting? It might be a one of a kind. That second one truly is a bull nose plane. I wonder if you are able to put enough down pressure on the cutting edge to make it work?

Re: Vintage Planes V.5
Looks like the same person made both. Slightly different materials. There's a fair chance the white parts are ivory.
