small boxes

#1

Post by sunnybob »

I've agreed to to have a stall table at a very local (3/4 mile) craft fair in a couple of weeks time so I've had to make a couple of table fillers due to a recent visitor unexpectedly going home with three of my biggest boxes :D .
This one is roughly apple shaped, about 5" across.
Woods are rippled ash, oak, and iroku in the middle. The drawer front should have been rippled ash to match, but while flush routing the drawer the oak exploded on me so I had to make another drawer. As I did not have another piece of rippled ash that matched the outer grain, I went with Bubinga as a contrast.
Jus trealised these pics make it look very lopsided, from the front they are almost the same.

One of those projects that grew and grew. When the oak on the drawer exploded, it damaged every section of the drawer. At that stage i nearly binned the whole thing.
But this is a hobby, for keeping my mind active, so it was another days work to build a second drawer to fit.

That must be why the drawer sides don't match the outer sides, I was scratching my head on that one.

I'm using up all my offcuts, so I couldnt just go cut more of the same. It will go cheap, and I dont know anybody locally who will even spot the difference.

There is a cult following for asymmetric pieces ala Dr. Seuss style cartoon furniture. Some consider it more artsy. Some Japanese designs are also asymetric but more in the way they divide up a cabinet as opposed to different shaped curves and radii. That might be something to explore sometime.
