If you found the frequency in the center of the blue band ,that would be the true blue, both sides would be shades of blue mixed with shades of other colors. The same would go for the yellow and red.
You are saying there are no true colors, if there were no true colors you wouldn't have any shades,it would just be a chaotic mix of frequencies. I am saying you have to have true colors to get consistent shades,

You are essentially correct Herb, true whatever color would be in the middle of that spectrum but the problem is that where each spectrum has changed to something else is somewhat subjective since probably there are no two of us who see it precisely the same. Most men are color blind to some extent. I'm a rare exception with near perfect color vision. The US Army told me so at the draft physicals I went to (and failed so no I didn't serve). That's where you look at the pages with the different colored dots that make numbers. As I was standing in line I was looking over shoulders and listening to what the replies were and thinking "What the hell is he looking at?" Anyway, some people probably got together and said "we're going to call a wavelength of this frequency pure (insert color here). And that is the standard we go by now.

Hmm Seems I brought up Rit maybe... six years ago? Word to the wise, however: it also will wash away rather easy. (Learned it the hard way) You'll have to put a good coat of poly or something hard to prevent it from coming off the wood.

Chuck I was thinking ,not what I see,but the frequency of one side of the band to the far side of the band as the center frequency between the two as the true color, regardless of whose eyes it is seen thru.

I'd have to go with Herb on this one...at some point in the spectrum, regardless of how infinitesimally precise the frequency, the true color would have to stand alone. Whether it could be duplicated (produced) or seen might be a different issue...

Visible light is just a part of the electromagnetic spectrum that we can see. The whole spectrum includes infrared, radio, ultraviolet, x-rays, gamma rays, and cosmic rays. Without looking it up I think it's the part between 3.000 and 7,000 angstrom that we see. I remember looking at something once and an aunt said what a pretty green and the object was clearly blue(ish since we are splitting hairs here). She was partly color blind so we weren't seeing it in the same way. So somewhere along the way after we learned what frequencies we were looking at some group of people had to get together and decide which frequencies we were going to identify as red, yellow, and blue. That decision had to have been purely subjective based on a consensus of opinions.

I like Mixol...
Besides adding it to the normal finishes I've mixed into WeldBond Adhesive to to give a blended or pronounced glue line...
Since WB will bridge gaps the results can be striking...
Resawn Maple or wood of choice suitable for bending, left rough cut, and glued up w/ tinted WB for contrast (in wood tones or even in vibrant colors)... Add glitter for that special project...

Needless to say some experimentation is necessary...

You're comparing theoretical physics to the actual art of mixing pigments to make paints, inks, and stains, Herb.
How on earth (literally) are you going to find three exotic substances that absorb every frequency EXCEPT the precise one that matches your definition of R/B/Y?
Remember colour is an individual perception. What you see as a 'true colour' isn't necessarily the same shade as I see.
(I took Wilcox's Colour mixing course, years ago; worth every penny!)
