Today's Attempts

#1

Post by OutoftheWoodwork »

While Ken was gone today, I transferred four patterns, and managed to burn one; (an Eagle). Wanted to sit down with Ken and do a couple more, but ran out of steam and opted for a nap, instead

This evening, we both sat down, and Ken did a bear paw, and I did another humming bird and a gnome house.

Thanks guys. The gnome house (from the day I found the drawing) I planned on doing for my daughter. I love how it seems to fit with the curved wood... it was meant to go on there. Anyway, we went to our daughter's today, and I gave it to her. She said she saw my fb post and said "hmmm I wonder if that's for me...." lol I knew I shoulda blocked her from that post

She did, Herb. She found a temporary spot for it within 5 minutes. This was followed with a request for one with fairies on it

What kind of wood is that, Barb. It really goes well with the wood burning color wise. do those have a coat of clear on them? The live edges really go with the theme too

To be honest, Herb, I really don't know. I was told that the one with the eagle on it is cherry. (I got a very thick piece of it, and a guy from work was able to split it for me on a large band saw.) The others, we think are cedar. They were scraps given to John, and while he was clearing out space in his work area, realized they were too thin for his CNC, so he gave it to me. I don't think I have very much of it left. I still have some monstrous pieces in the workshop to make large scenes on (with the router) that I hope to get to soon. But the coloring of it, is a lot lighter.

Thank you, Tom. I'm having fun learning this new craft. Ken is taking a shine to it, too, I think.

Thanks, Roxanne. Ken is loving the one he got, and I have to admit, I like his, too; basically because of the tips his came with, and I like the controls better.

You Tube videos are a good way to learn how to do the different techniques. I've been watching a couple by this woman (last name Irish, I think) and she has a couple web sites, too. I haven't gotten a lot of her patterns. I'm finding sketches and drawings I like, and making them that way.

Which one do you have and which does Ken have? The book I got with mine was Joanne Tobey and I ordered a bunch of tips from some place, can't remember where now.

Those are both good sets at a bargain price too. Are the tips and holders interchange able? Between the 2 you have almost 4 doz. tips.

Yeah they are. That's why I picked the machine I did for Ken. However, I don't think I have that many tips, Herb. But I did end up with a nice array of tips with Kens, and got the three different sized ball tips, which was another reason I picked his machine. His "pens", however, don't reflect the heat away as well as mine, but my machine, I don't care for the temperature control. Pros and Cons with every machine, I guess. Between the two, I'm pretty happy. :D
