Re: WOOD SUMBUDDY!!!!
Not completely appropriate in this case, as regardless of spelling or pronunciation, or even of origin, a tomato is recognised throughout the English speaking world as a tomato.
A finger joint however, through common usage, can mean two separate and entirely incompatible things.
For that reason, and for that reason alone, I use the term box joint to describe a joint that is used for making boxes, and finger joint for the tapered side to side or end to end joint.
The finger joint should really be referred to as a "Tapered Finger Joint", purely to avoid confusion, regardless of RIGHT or WRONG in the matter.
If someone asks on line about buying a cutter to make a box, and then gets told to look for a finger joint cutter, that will not help the person in the slightest, and cost delay and expense. Whichever joint is being discussed, the difference should be explained each and every time.
There, seconds out, round 2, ding ding.

Re: WOOD SUMBUDDY!!!!
I was educated long before I became acquainted with you Stick. So were these thousands upon thousands of woodworkers who still don't know you who refer to it as a finger joint. I had no idea up to now that you are Herb are both promoters of cancel culture.
There is no confusion if you do like Bob just suggested and point out that the fingers for splicing are tapered as opposed to straight. As I pointed out, usually you know the difference according to the context it's used in. Just as if I were speaking to you and said "So you want me to sew your shirt before I go out and sow the seeds?" you would know exactly what is meant by each and every word means despite 3 of them being indistinguishable when heard and having entirely different meanings. That's one of the wonderful things about the ability of a human brain. Well at least most human brains. By the way, your argument is essentially still just one of "Because I said so" and unless you are the Creator Of Everything that doesn't win you an argument. I'm wondering just how long it's going to take you and Herb to figure out you can't win here because in order to win you have to cancel out all of the people who call it a finger joint and that is impossible to do, especially since you refuse to make an effort at doing so like I suggested to you. You'll have to get all the references off the web, remove all the youtube videos, change all the tool ads, and get all the books reprinted that call it a finger joint. Unless you are capable of doing that then your task to have it called nothing besides a box joint is doomed to failure. That's one of those Al Gore type inconvenient truths.

There is nothing more pointless than an argument between people who are convinced they are right.
Oh, wait, yes there is.... its an online argument between people who are convinced they are right.
C'mon people, move along. Life is too short, especially for us old folks.

Re: WOOD SUMBUDDY!!!!
I would love to Bob and I offered what should have been an acceptable compromise. Since enough people occupy both camps of thought then either choice of term should be acceptable. I can safely say that I've proven that over and over and over again. Unfortunately there are at least two people on the forum who choose to be intransigent on the subject despite the fact that their argument that it can only be the one choice is obviously not shared by a multitude of woodworkers who are at least as competent as they and some obviously even more so.sunnybob wrote: ↑Wed Mar 10, 2021 1:23 pm There is nothing more pointless than an argument between people who are convinced they are right.

Please stay, Bob, I promise I will not pursue this any further. You are a real asset to the forum, and speaking for everyone really appreciated here.

Re: WOOD SUMBUDDY!!!!
Bob I was willing to let it go from the beginning. If you want to call that joint a box joint I'm fine with that. It's just not what I call it, nor is it what many thousands of other woodworkers call it, some of whom have incredibly impressive credentials, which I have not seen among the camp who choose to only refer to it as a box joint.
