Boat Upholstery Panels.

Two of my sons removed the above Vinyl covered strips from our boat & delivered them to my garage/shop so I can renew the marine ply substrate. The original wood was beginning to rot in places where the vinyl was damaged so I got the job to do the woodwork, I had to remove all the staples which were used , (as well as glue) & I have never seen so many staples. Once the vinyl & sponge rubber are scraped off the boards I will use the old boards as templates & outline shapes & screw holes etc.on to the new 1/2 inch thick marine ply..Eldest son has the upholstery tools so he is able to stitch & staple. He will be using stainless steel staples of course I began removing the old staples last Monday & reckon I have about 2 or so hours to finish.Will post a photo or two when done & I'm taking advantage of the cooler days of late but have never seen so many staples!!

Did exactly the same thing for my son in law last Friday. Thankfully not as many staples.

With those new air staplers they use now, it is easy to get a lot of staples driven.

jj, That happened to me on a rocking chair I had to rebuild. They did not want any upholstery on it ,wanted to paint is. So after I repaired all the broken parts , it looked like it had been shot with a shot gun and #8 shot. I got a tube of auto glaze and wiped it on and rubbed it into all the holes then sanded them smooth. When the primer went on you couldn't tell it had any staple hols in the seat and rails.

One of the furniture restoration guys up here swears by auto-body filler for repairs (brain freeze; can't think of the product name...).
By the time he's done his magic with stains and finishes you literally can't tell where the repairs are.
Makes repairing damaged veneers (almost) affordable...

Bondo? There is one they use after the bondo that is finer grained so that the edges can be feathered out and I can't remember the name for it. Something glaze I think. For wood repairs I usually use Rock Hard. It seems to be harder than softwoods I've used it on which can make it hard to sand flat. If it has to match the wood color then Famowood.

NO not Bondoo..........It is a body glaze been around for ever, I think I first used it around 1949. It is a solvent, lacquer based self hardening putty. Get it at Auto Parts Store.
