Wooden Mallet

#1

Post by Herb Stoops »

Here is a picture I found on the internet on Pintrest, originally from LumberJocks forum of an interesting shaped wooden mallet. Some of you might have already seen it, but it was new to me.

Beautiful Herb. Doesn't look like it has ever been used . Some one took great pleasure in just the making of it.

Very nice. I like the pins in it but I wonder why they didn't pin through the end of the handle?

It might have a narrow tenon that goes between the brass pins and has a flared out shoulder against the underside of the head. If the handle breaks it would be easier to change the handle without having to drive out the pin. In the unlikely event that it happens. Might even have a wedge in the end of the handle to tighten it. I think it is more for display, though, than to be used. Makes a good conversation piece,

For the woodworker who wants to make his own mallet here is a nice little drawing. These are fun to make and very well accepted as gifts, not hard either. Once you make one you will get the bug and make a bunch,VOE.

I made one based on your pattern Herb. It's another project that you can use scraps on and they (the mallets) work very well. I turned the bottom end of my handle but I should have turned it right up to the head as I sometimes find myself choking up on the handle that far.

Yes you are right,Chuck, about using scrap, it is a good way to use up small cut-offs, and as you can see they laminated different colors to make interesting grain patterns so each one is a little different but they are dimensionly similar.

It might be because there's lots of 'em and it takes a bit to load them up...

On your screen, how long before they appear again...?

Here's the one I built from the pattern you sent me. Birch handle which I turned part of and should have turned more of, walnut, and arbutus which may be also called myrtlewood. The size of your pieces kind of determines the pattern.

3 appeared above and 7 as subtitles, and the one on the next post after, and the one on this post and the 2 on chucks post show as subtitles. I must have broke something on this thread, I posted a picture on the weather thread OK. If I click on the subtitle the picture appears in a separate window,so not all is broke.
