Oak bedroom set finished

#1

Post by sunnybob »

After I made the oak headboards and 2 drawer unit last month, 'er indoors said to make a bigger drawer unit to complete the set.
So I made this 4 drawer dresser.

This goes with the smaller unit, and they now have matching handles.

You can just see one of the headboards at the back of the pic.

I made a few small (ish) mistakes, but only a visiting carpenter would find them :D  8-)

I don't see any of the medullary rays that should be visible in white oak. It doesn't really look like the red oak I have some of either. Whatever species it is I like the look of it.

Great job, goes well with the other pieces. I like the natural finish, so fresh and clean looking.

Chuck, I see some Medullary Rays in the RH front leg.

Chuck, This is most likely European white oak. I dont know the difference between European and American, just that there is one.
Heres a closer pic of the upright and left side.
Note I took the picture in a dark room with a flash, rather than wander around and open all the shutters (G)

Once Herb mentioned the legs I saw the rays. I didn't know American and European oak were different but those boards don't look familiar to me. When I was a kid oak floors were very common in houses, at least down in the deep south where I grew up. The grain on the leg in that last picture looks like what you would have seen in that flooring. But the other boards in the side don't. Anyway, I very muck like the look of them.

This is close to the finished color of the red oak here.
Chuck does Red Oak have those Medullary lines, I have never seen them in the red oak? we get mostly red oak here.

I won't say never Herb but I've been digging through some of my stash the last few days as I remodel the cabinet where our built in oven goes and I can't recall seeing any in the boards I handled. Red oak is far more common than white oak is so more plentiful and cheaper.

These are offcuts, on top of A4 writing paper to give a reference colour.

The woodyard has red oak as well as white, and they are easily distinguished. This oak is almost silver when sanded to 240 or above

The 3 Reddish pieces sure look like red oak and the short piece looks like white. Interesting. White oak usually finishes out a yellowish color and the red oak a pinkish color , with our oaks.

They are all from the same plank. Go figure.
In the woodyard the red oak is very obviously more red than the white, even in the rough sawn state.
