Bosch axial sliding compound miter saw..
Any opinions on this saw? I’m considering selling my old Rockwell radial arm saw and putting this in its stead..

Re: Bosch axial sliding compound miter saw..
I’m a RAS fan so keep the Rockwell...assuming you don’t need any additional depth of cut.
I had come to the same point and decided to keep my old Dewalt...
Crosscuts on TS...long board crosscuts on RAS...dados on RAS...
Having said that, if you need portable, the Bosch...but start your exercises now...

Re: Bosch axial sliding compound miter saw..
This is more of a planning exercise... as I look a little bit forward when my shop cabinet/bench build gets underway, I want to eliminate inefficiencies where it makes sense.
This is the saw I have..

Re: Bosch axial sliding compound miter saw..
I am with Nick on this one. What Nick said was exactly how I use my Craftsman 12" RA saw. I wish it had the feature of your Dewalt RA with the lower arm instead on swinging the upper arm to get angles. But I would not trade it for a chop saw unless I was on the road again. And if I ever did go that route, I am with you, Micheal on the Bosch.
I do have a 12" Dewalt SLMS stowed under the bench that I have only used a couple of times. It would take me awhile to get used to the Pull-out Swing -down Push- cut action. I don't have room to mount it in the shop, as it takes up more room on the back side to slide it in. It probably would work well on the job. I do like the concept of the Bosch articulating arm. it would seem to require less room behind the saw.
You are on the right track if you are determined to replace the Dewalt RA.

And that is the actual saw I have, but in someone else’s shop.

What's with this 'either, or' heresy?! There'll be no eliminating tools; are we clear on that?

Re: Bosch axial sliding compound miter saw..
I looked at it and the Milwaukee 12”. At the time, the reviews I read weren’t good as many had an alignment problem and owners couldn’t figure out how to adjust it. I’ve heard they fixed that. It takes up a way smaller footprint than a slider. I want to move my Milwaukee and I need about 42” from wall to tip of handle. I have no issues other than that with my Milwaukee. It’s deadly accurate and has a digital scale accurate to .1 degree.

Re: Bosch axial sliding compound miter saw..
Hi Michael,
I had a Dewalt RAS 40 years, but decided to "downsize" because it was tiring, not to say dangerous, sneaking around my small but overfull shop. The small rear footprint made the Bosch the winner. In other respects, DeWalt, Makita, Metabo were on a par. Milwaukee is rare around here, Festool is out of my league (also has almost zero rear space requirement, but I would not like to use the vertical handle on the Kapex, compared to the horizontal handle on the Bosch). I see that Makita and Metabo have recently brought out zero rear-clearance models, with forward-projecting sliding bars, but the Bosch (EU model) has more power than most.
Another thing: I have never gotten around to fine-tuning the settings, as out of the box everything was plumb and square: plumb to a digital angle gauge, square to a try square (have not tried the 5 cuts yet, have not needed that degree of precision just yet). Fences could be better - slight gap at the bottom for the first couple of inches, problem if cutting very thin stock. There is an arm lock if the glide action is not needed - then functions as a chop saw. The feeblest part of the saw is the hold-down.
Mounted on a 60 cm deep board, when not in use the front lever swings way over to the right, so the saw is completely onboard on the 60 cm. No hip/thigh bruises. Dust collection: now that is another matter.
I still regret parting with my RAS (now have no ability to use a dado set or Freud box joint blades, EU model of Bosch TS cannot take them), but what the hey! I regret parting with any tool, any time.

Re: Bosch axial sliding compound miter saw..
I am a RAS fan I have had one for over 40 years. In fact I have 2 in my shop. In my opinion I would try to keep the RAS There are just some things I find are just way more convenient to do on the RAS. I like the sliding compound miters too. So if it were me I would try to find room for the Ras in your plans and also Buy the Bosch. One can never have to many tools!!!

Re: Bosch axial sliding compound miter saw..
correct....
As any woodworker/carpenter/construction guy knows. You can't use "do I need it?" as a criteria for buying a new tool. Whether or not you'll even ever use it is besides the point! For all you confused people out there, I will give you the listed reasons for buying a new tool straight from "The Man Bible" Chapter 35 Section 72 Subsection D Paragraph 23 states:
You simply buy a new tool because:
a) It's there
b) You can
I hope this has cleared up any questions any of you may have for buying new tools, and hopefully relieve some of the guilty feelings you may have about purchasing that new tool with the money you should have spent on a new dishwasher for your SO.

Re: Bosch axial sliding compound miter saw..
I look at it this way. When a 1oz. bottle of lotion, perfume, makeup cremes, etc. cost $125,even with the free lipstick or little dish of face cream, eyebrow brush, etc. then I see 100 bottles of different make-up arranged at the dressing table, I do not feel a guilty bone in my body, buying a new tool that will last my lifetime. There I said it............

You forgot "because I got a good deal on it." I bought a Delta scroll saw at an auction the other day. I probably won't use it a lot but "I got a good deal on it".Stick486 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 1:23 pmcorrect....

Get it from Menards when they have their 11% off weeks. I took the liberty to check it out and that drops your cost from $649 to $577. Everyone else is holding the $649 price.

The thing to note is that the Mfg. may have a firm retail selling price that can be advertised, but the retailer will often reduce the price if you ask in person.honesttjohn wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 6:34 pm Get it from Menards when they have their 11% off weeks.
