Trying to Salvage A Few Screw Ups

#1

Post by OutoftheWoodwork »

Yesterday was a day of pulling out old stuff and finding out what to do with these signs that have been sitting her for almost two (2) years.

The Welcome Signs had just been sitting here, while the others had started out as those "tag" signs to hang outside on a door.

The spacing on these tag signs were off, and to be honest, one was carved in the wrong direction (on all of them), so there they sat. The coloring of the Pumpkin Spice was too nice to let it end up in the burn pile, or in the garbage, so I played with it a bit: I took off the tag portion, and did a bit of measuring and cutting to see what I could do with it. I then decided "what the hell... if it doesn't work, they're all going in the garbage anyway, might as well see how the rest would take to this process" and The tape measure, pencils and miter were all getting a workout. This is the end result.

The Welcome signs still need to be touched up, and the colors in these boards are by no means justified in the picture... the colors are so rich and bold, (Except Grumpy... he was a bit on the light side, even after the conditioner was put on) I can't wait to get them done, but will probably be this weekend. (Maybe. I was supposed to be out there all this past weekend, and never made it out there until almost 2:00 yesterday afternoon! GAH!)

So your input here, is welcomed; staggered signs are in right now... does staggering work for these screw ups, or are they all doomed to be trash, burned, or shredded...?

Something doesn't look right about them to me. They don't seem to balance. I'm wondering if hanging one below the other with hooks and leaving a space between them would fix that?

They are beautiful, Barb,.
Maybe Chuck is onto something. Just a space between them would look good , but the signs are very well done as usual.

I often wondered ,how does the younger generation take to cursive writing?
I love it myself, but it is rarely seen anymore. You make it flow so smoothly. If I did it the bit would hang up on the grain and look all bumpy.
I think you did a good save and this is the time of year for those kind of items.

Mine does too, if I don't have a good sharp bit, and I've learned to watch for grain. The closer the grain, no matter how amazing it looks, will screw up the best pattern. So now I try and look at shade of the wood, and keep the grain from being close together, unless I have a freshly sharpened bit.

Thank you for the compliment. As for the script, a few of my new signs are being made from svg files that people make with their vinyl cutter, and upload to sell vinyl stickers, and the younger generations are all about those svg files.

I wasn't familiar with SVG Files, so looked them up. Boy there is a variety of alphabets, and other graphics.

Another thought is to join them with small rope (1/4"?) instead of chain or hooks and tie a knot in the rope between the signs. The look of rope goes up and down over time in terms of popularity. I think it's on the upswing right now.

Google and Etsy are full of Signs/Sayings that are done in SVG. Most are downloadable files. I think all the offset signs I posted were svg pictures/files I was able to transform.
