My Starrett is as good as the old ones. I haven't used it a lot over the years but It's at least 20 years old and it's still as good as the day I bought it. I was using it yesterday to measure the inside of a window opening. The slide makes that an easy measure. Outside measures are hard to measure with one. I was going to post a link to one but I can't find any so maybe Starrett quit making them.

My bamboo ones don't have that sliding tip either.

The Starrett with the slide is an SX 40. If it's missing the slide it's only half as useful. If you are trying to measure an inside dimension that is under 6' in length then an extension rule is one of the best tools to do that with. If you don't have something to butt a folding rule against then they are hard to use and therefore not very accurate on a whole. For things like the inside of carcasses or window openings a folding rule with a slide is hard to beat.

If you don't have a folding rule and need inside measurements, grab a couple of sticks, overlap them, hold them together after stretching inside to inside and then measure the sticks...you probably know this already.

I have no information on the drill press, but my grandfather owned a larger version of it. He died when I was 8, and shortly after, the drill press was gone. I have no idea who got it, but never saw it again. My dad had 5 brothers and one sister. To my knowledge, none of them had it afterwards. My dad once told me that it had come from a blacksmith shop. That's all that I can offer. Had I been older, I would have been asking for it.
