Out of curiosity...
Just out of curiosity; how many have tape measures within easy reach in their kitchens, dining rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, family rooms and etc but not their shops???

Re: Out of curiosity...
I have them in the kitchen junk drawer, and several in the shop, plus at least one in the Motor Home. So we can measure how far we drive in a day. plus Sandra has a couple of small ones in her sewing cabinet and out in her gym. And like Herb, they all measure the same.

A set of 3 in the sideboard in the dining room. Wife has a few measuring devices where she sews. Out in the shop at least a dozen if you also count the 50 and 100 footers.

Re: Out of curiosity...
Most of mine are 12' tapes. They are small easier to carry, I don't need the 25" unless I am building something large which I seldom do anymore.

Dan, with this picture that you took, I am very impressed, this took the utmost of muscle control. How did you do this, just hold your breath and push. and the fact that you just happened to have a camera along.

Re: Out of curiosity...
I carry a 1" thick Stanley 12ft in my pocket, so I guess I have at least one in every room that I'm in. There are several in the kitchen and one in each vehicle console, plus the one that I'm carrying.
It's great to be back with old friends. I've been reading all the posts and trying to catch up. I missed a few months due to a leg problem and everybody disappeared from the other website on me. It sure is quiet over there. I'm very glad that Desert Rat Tom helped me find all of you and @Stick let me join. I've been re-learning to walk again over the last several months. It's harder now then back when I learned the first time 77 years ago. I haven't been in my shop since August 2020, but managed to do so several times over the last two weeks. My #2 son has been doing necessary repairs for me, but his idea of returning my tools is "just inside the shop door on the floor." So my visits to my shop so far have been dedicated to trying to clear the floor and put everything back where it belongs. I haven't spent much time out there yet, so the pile isn't completely gone yet.

Re: Out of curiosity...
I am sure glad you came over Charley, I hope the leg heals OK. I have not done anything in my shop for months. I have had a few people just starting to nag on me to get back out there and do something. I have a couple of repair jobs that need to be done when I get the gumption to go back out. Good to have you here.

Re: Out of curiosity...
Charley I think you and I and your #2 and my #1 (and only) son should all get together and go over shop etiquette. My son has the gonads to complain about my messes while I’m in the middle of projects but I don’t think I’ve ever seen him clean up after himself.
I’m glad you found us and I hope your able to get back in your shop on a steady basis. My kids gave me a stool 2 Christmas’ ago and that makes it a lot easier on the legs.

Four, not counting the 100 footer. Kitchen, living room junk drawer, two in the shop. Only use the one 16 footer for accurate measurements.

Re: Out of curiosity...
LV is selling what looks identical to the wooden folding rulers I bought, and mentioned here awhile back, for at least 2x what I paid.
Neither theirs nor mine have that thin extending finger from the tip...

Re: Out of curiosity...
If you're working in 3 dimensions the rule with the slide is one of the best tools available for taking inside measurements. If you're only working on flat surfaces this tip extension https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/to ... em=50K5801 works well and is really handy for squaring frames.DaninVan wrote: ↑Sun Nov 07, 2021 11:27 am LV is selling what looks identical to the wooden folding rulers I bought, and mentioned here awhile back, for at least 2x what I paid.

Re: Out of curiosity...
Then you won't be happy with the new Lufkin, Klein, Crescent, Rhino, etc... And, the slide is not brass and smooth like the old Lufkins and the wood is not as sturdy.
I was shopping for a new one a while ago (lost mine) and the rulers in the stores were junk with Klein the best...I scored big time at a garage sale...3 old Lufkins...

Re: Out of curiosity...
@Stick486 I'll do you two better:
I carry one in my purse, and one in the center counsel of both trucks, as well. There's one in the kitchen "junk" drawer, one in the drawer of the coffee table, one in my end table (unless that one made it's way to one of the bedrooms) I used to have one in a little cabinet drawer in the bathroom (it was one of those LTD cabinets that looked bigger in the magazine) and Ken usually has one in our bedroom in his nightstand or somewhere... I have no idea where any are in the workshop; they never stay where they're supposed to be. I'm forever looking for one! Oh yeah! I have one in the utility/furnace room where we have one of those metal shelves that has the garbage bags, the dog towels, etc.

all those places here also and the bathrooms and office...
I'm sure there's one or two in crawl space but not put there deliberately...
there's one on my key chain (along w/ 3 keys, screwdriver, dog tag and a P38) ... I don't carry a purse...
