.
I teamed up with two amazing guys, my RIOs – Jeff and Moose – Ironically both ended up ejecting while flying with others.
Jeff’s story goes like this: he was flying with our Operations Officer, who had a slow, southern drawl. They’d takin a hit through one of their Napalm cans, which exploded under the Phantom’s right wing. The FAC immediately gave them vectors to a nearby safe ejection area. Ops O, viewing flames in the mirrors, announced in his long, slow, drawl “Aw doggonit Jeff, Looks like were on fire, probably gonna need to jump out of this thing, (pause), Jeff?, Jeff?” – and of course Jeff had already ejected.
OPS O punched out a little late and was picked up well down range – pulled out of triple canopy jungle - dangling from his chute.
An Army loach helicopter pilot landed quickly alongside Jeff, who was holding his fiberglass ejection seat pack in one hand. The Loach pilot said “Sir, I’m sorry, but you can’t bring that on board” – to which Jeff replied “The hell I can’t, this is my new bar stool seat! -- And later, it so became.
Jeff’s Ejection Seat Face Curtain is also on a wall near his hard-earned bar stool.
