When i clicked on the image it opened up with a URL title of "Infill Plane". what does that do?
Also it looks like that silver 'cowcatcher might possibly be hinged so that it rotates upwards(?).Would that imply anything???

Dan, Infill planes are when you have a steel or metal body,i.e. the sole and the sides, and the rest is filled in with wooden part except for the blade and clamping mechanism. On the particular plane there is a lot of metal included on the infill.
That on with the "cow catcher", you could be correct about hinging up or maybe removing it.

The top one is made of pine so I would also say it's home made. Paul Sellars has a video to make one similar, although less complicated looking than that one. His video turns a chisel into a rabbet plane or rebate plane in his lingo. He does a lot of carving with a chisel to make it where I would laminate it from pieces which could be cut with a chop saw. making it much simpler.

You have to wonder if some of those were ever meant to be used.

I agree, but they sure are nice to look at. Although I must say that the wooden block planes I made ,I use all the time. They just feel "right" in my hand and are not cold steel feeling.

I can't bring myself to use the one you gifted me. It's just too pretty to risk marring it up. I made a test cut and it performs beautifully. Still, I can't take it out of the drawer except to admire it.
