This picture of the soldiers in the fox hole in all that mud brought back some memories.
Upon our arrival in Vietnam, we were trucked all day long in the rain. No canvas on the truck.
We were deposited on a muddy hill top in some way out place not even noted on maps.
We dug in.
Everyone was tired and hardly anyone dug much more than a shallow bowl in the ground.
The rain kept filling the holes as fast as we could dig them.
I went around and pushed them to dig in since we had no cover at all on this bald hill top.
As soon as it got dark, the mortars began to drop.
Last maybe 5 minutes.
No one was hit,
For the rest of the night, all you could hear was the chunk and swish of intrenching tools digging in the earth,
by morning, every position had an elaborate two man position with ponchos covering the tops and drainage trenches dug all around them to remove the rain water.
All it took was the proper incentive for them to forget about being wet and miserable.

That is not good.
At some point he will realize he is passing everyone else on the way down.
