USS Edsall (DD-219) rests on the seabed about 18,000 feet deep in the Indian Ocean, roughly 200 miles east of Christmas Island. She was discovered in 2023 by the Royal Australian Navy during survey operations and her identity was officially confirmed and publicly announced on November 11, 2024. Survey imagery showed her sitting upright and largely intact, with her hull and major structural features still clearly recognizable despite more than 80 years underwater. The wreck remains undisturbed in total darkness under extreme pressure and is protected as a war grave honoring the crew lost with her.

USS Edsall was sunk on March 1, 1942, during the early Pacific War after transporting U.S. Army Air Forces pilots rescued from USS Langley toward Java. She encountered a powerful Japanese force that included battleships, cruisers, and carrier aircraft. Edsall fought back and maneuvered skillfully for over an hour while under heavy shellfire and air attack before carrier dive bombers scored fatal hits. She eventually sank with 185 U.S. Navy sailors and 31 U.S. Army Air Forces personnel aboard, marking one of the most determined last stands by a U.S. Navy destroyer during World War II.
