I always wanted to do that.

Did move into an old 1st Cav base camp and found a huge stash of out of date C rations. The engineers dug a huge crater and pushed them into it. We spayed 1200 gallons of diesel fuel and a hundred gallons of Mogas on them.
Got back a 1/4 mile and shot tracers into the pit.
We were not back far enough.
Very impressive.

I spent many a night sitting on an out post watching PUFF work in the distance. Out of the dark sky, a stream of shells would erupt in a river of fire from 1 in 5 tracers from quad 50s or 60s firing at some ground target. The wave of tracers would flux as if the tip of a whip, as the force of firing so many rounds at one time would push the aircraft side ways across the sky. The sound would rise and fall in tremor some like RRRRRRROOOOOOOORRRRRRRRROOOOOOO. The gunner crews on board would use snow shovels to remove the piles of spent rounds out a door of the aircraft.
Even from our distant observation point, it would scare the hell out of you.
