Though the seas are rough, the OS2U was better able to handle them thanks to the larger, centrally mounted float. Single float aircraft (generally supported by two outrigger floats) generally possessed superior rough water capability. They were generally more structurally solid as the central float was often attached directly to the fuselage or even built into it.
Dual float aircraft (Example: AR 196) in contrast, could not handle the same levels of rough water as the single float aircraft. However, they were more stable and somewhat easier to tie up to piers/docks....
