Finishing and mineral oil

#1

Post by Papasombre »

Hello colleagues.
As I wrote in my introduction I am doing my first 3D board. It will be exposed to the weather and I would like to apply some finish after the mineral oil. Is this possible?
Any assistance will be appreciated.

Are we talking about a cutting board or something else?

If a cutting board then I've used "Watco" Butcher block oil & finish over mineral oil.

Applied the mineral oil (2-3 coats??). Let it dry, wiped off any excess seepage, let it dry again for about 2 days, then put on the Watco.
The Watco is a slow build. Probably took 4 or more coats to get a sheen that I was happy with. It's basically just some combination of wax & a carrier.

I can explain it to you but I can't UNDERSTAND it for you!
Wait a moment, let me overthink it.!

Hi, Smitty.
Thanks a lot for your fast response.
In this case, it will be a decorative board for a door. My concern is that the piece will be exposed to the weather (high humidity, sunny days et all not snow)

If it's not going to be used for food cutting, you could use a marine product...Spar Varnish.

It is typically used on marine wood like teak, mahogany, etc, for masts and outside wood. Takes weather punishment very well and contracts and expands with the environment.

It does not repair well so if it gets scratched it's tough to repair just the scratch.

Don't forget, Alexis is in Venezuela, ie tropical sun. Pretty hard on clear finishes.

Thank you for the valuable info Stick486.
Looking at it mineral oil has not been considered in the list attached to the PDF.
To reduce the surface deterioration due to the weather I want to apply some coats of polyurethane varnish after the mineral oil has dried. Is this possible?

Thanks a lot Nickp for your suggestion. I will try to find this product on my local hardwere stores.
