Strip the red shag carpet...
repair the threads and risers, added a center stringer and trued 'em up...
Both sets of stairs the top to bottom are kicked/racked ¾" the opposite way of each other.... (3" OOS)... raised the stair sets up 7/8" to equalize the top and bottom riser heights... Repaired, plumbed, and de-hacked the center wall. ..
made up thread covers to fit...
Installed a new garage access door (increase from 2/10 to 3/0) and tiled the landing....

The look is a huge improvement. Since we don't wear shoes into our houses up here the polished steps can be slippery in sock feet. I don't mind carpet on them for that reason but shag just doesn't sound like a good idea.

the finish isn't slippery even when wet and about as bullet proof as a finish can get...
it's Rexthane, (about 140$ a gallon back then) the same stuff airplane hanger floors are painted w/..
equate it to 180/220 paper... and it cleans very easily...
several years later it still looked like the day it was put on...
