The original had 24"OC joists decked w/ 5/4 PT decking... this made for a very spongy deck...
10" rise steps..
no hot tub...
6"OC balusters...
no hand rails...
very poor water letting... the original deck sloped back to the house... there was rot every where including the rim joist...
straight and level and plumb otherwise didn't exist..
the pics say what was done...

Clever solution. It provides a strong, secure attachment and doesn't detract from the "Flintstone" design. You could have run chains right down to the seat frame or arms but that is a pretty unique design and very strong.
the drilled holes were filled w/ butyl caulk...
later I added a pair of 1" wide riveted iron compression bands.cuffs to each top and a single at each bottom...
think wagon wheel rim...
I feared splitting was going to happen......

I don't think the splits would reduce the strength that much. At least not vertically oriented. It's all still long grain, there would just be a gap in it. If it was a cross bar and the split was on a side instead of on top or bottom it might be reduced some. The caulk was a good idea.
