I have a small table saw that already has pretty good dust collection from the bottom side. Since my little shop is in the basement I am thinking of making an overhead dust collector above the blade too. The question I have is where to put the dust collection hose on the dust collector...on the back side of the blade or in front of the blade. I have seen it done both ways on line. Any ideas?

I have one on my Delta Contractor saw and It's been great! I don't actually use the top port, but I should; most of my collection is straight down and out through a 4" hose.

The blade is throwing sawdust forward at you so I would go from the top. It's on my to do list but I haven't yet decided on a design. One idea is to get 2 1/2" muffler pipe and have it bent to the shape I want and then weld a strap on for mounting it to the frame of the wing. Another is to hang it from a chain from the ceiling. I could break down and buy one too.

square steel tube is the easiest to work w/ and modify...

I didn't think of having an open back, but after looking at the design in your picture it should pull air better than what I was planning. I was thinking of having a radius on each side of the blade (for air intake) and the hose towards me with a closed back on the collector. I have a new plan...thanks for your help!

you could gate it to balance the air flow...

the arm is pretty straight forward…
the arm could be adapted to be part of the ducting…

these collectors work best w/ a short fence...

The reasons I've never settled on a design are because of the fence during thin ripping and functions like using a tenon jig where the DC needs to be moved out of the way. Having the shroud open on the fence side and the attachments to the arm slotted so it could be moved sideways to allow the fence in close to the blade would fix that.
