Workers Of Wood

Bought a box of assorted tools at the auction. The pictured backsaw was in it and the reason I bought the lot. It’s a Marples and the split nuts in the handle puts it sometime in the 1800s. The farriers rasp in the photo was in the box and I’m wondering if it’s suitable for rasping wood since I have no plans on shoeing a horse or fixing one’s hooves any time soon. It seems pretty sharp still.

Learn something new everyday. I have one if those rasps acquired under similar circumstances. Didn't know it was for hooves. I have used it on wood without consequence.

the metal is usually a fuzz harder then a wood rasp...
two cutting styles of a farrier's rasp...
shown is one side of the rasp and the flip side...

Yep. This one is double sided. I’ll have to give it a try on something. The main issue may be whether it’s bad for clogging and hard to clean. It has pretty aggressive teeth.

I saw Sticks post first. Good to know Dan. Unlike a wood rasp these are meant to be used two handed so it has no teeth a couple inches from the end so it may be much nicer to use when I can clamp my work down.

BTW.. that tooth design didn't come around until the mid/late 70's... it's the standard now...

Sweet! Those are beauties.

What is the difference in the tooth deign? How did you determine it wasn't a wood rasp. It appears too new to me,looks like my wood rasps, I have both flat and half round, but they are same tooth shape on both sides of rasps. Is there a trade mark stamped above the tang?

I wasn't aware of the effect of pee on their hooves. Now I know why it's important to keep their stalls clean.
