Gnome Home Birdhouse

For Christmas I made birdhouses to stand among the mushrooms. I used the larger Linden/Basswood branches from my tree out back. They stood about eight inches tall.

After Christmas I played with some short pieces and made Gnome home doors for them. Didn't drill for the birds in these. I put a door in the one I kept for myself too.

I made the doors and frames as an assembly and let them into the turnings. I found I would never make it as a carver. Can't explain how the bark sticks to them but never lost a single section of it during the turning and carving.

Nice detail work. Was the wood green? When we want to peel bark off building logs, rails, posts, etc we like to cut the wood in late May, early June during the spring growth spurt. Most peel pretty easy by then. By late summer it's more like chipping at concrete. Wood that's been dead for a while often has the bark fall off when handled roughly

These are dead falls picked up below the tree. Some of them had bug holes in them so I microwaved them to kill what may have been in them. The cooked ones bark wrinkled a little but were okay once they cooled down..

OOH, Those are nicely done. I have never figured how bark sticks and some doesn't. Good tip on the micro wave, are they chewy,or crunchy when they are done?
When you stain them, do you stain the bark Too? I like them all, the Door ones especially.
Good job!
Herb

No stain on these Herb. Brushed on about four coats of amber shellac and no sanding between coats.
