Dowel cutting jig

When I want to cut dowels any length I want , and any size I make this jig.
Cut a short block of wood say 2"x2" any length you want. Drill a hole lengthwise to fit the dowel you want to cut. Then mark the length on the side of the length and slide a dowel into the block Butt the block against the fence push the dowel tight to the fence and cut the dowel, as many as you want.This is a good safe way to cut dowels from 1/8" long th what eveer odd length you want. and dowel is held inside the block until pushed outso the blade can not grab it and throw it.

I found another example I used to cut some plugs to cover the heads of fasteners . These are 1/8" thick.

Great idea, Herb...nice and safe way to handle small plugs or dowels...this will save some fingies from getting into the sharpies...

For someone without a bandsaw, that'd work just as well with a hacksaw or pullsaw, by hand.

Clamp a another block to your workbench so that it doesn't hit your knuckles and push the jig up against it to cut.

I do something similar. I have a V-shaped cradle that I clamp onto the miter gauge, then clamp a block on where I want the length to be. The advantage to it is that it works for multiple diameter dowels without having to drill a hole for each size.

On the table saw I had problems of never finding the small cut off so I made this one to contain the cut off against the fence so it can't get awyay

Great idea Herb. When they were short ones I always cut them with a hand saw but that's much easier if there are a few to do.
