An original Pocket Multi-tool
I ran across this the other day. Reminded me of when I was a youth. Just about every boy from the age of 6yo. and up had a pocket knife. How else were we to sharpen pencils at school and the points on the arrows we made or the notches in the bows that we made to shoot the arrows. Also for other important tasks, like carving our initials in a tree or cutting twine for all kinds of tasks.
I carried one up until I had to go through a metal detector and was rejected, and the only way to get through was to surrender the pocket knife or walk the 1/4 mile back to my car and leave it and come back again. Which I did.(took the walk).
They weren't considered Multi-tools then, but here is one that might qualify for that title.

$295, wow. Keep that in a safe place Herb. I must admit I've never seen one like it before. Back in the day you're talking about most knives had pretty good steel in the blades. Now you have to spend pretty good money on one that will take and keep an edge.

Yeah, I think this one was the jail break special, that they baked in a cake, or at least the way the story goes. You are right, Chuck about the quality of the blades, now they go for stainless steel, originally high carbon steel.

Yeah, Keith, I think they used to call that the Electricians knife, they could strip insulation and the screw driver tip to loosen screws in boxes. Also hand the all purpose knife blade.

Re: An original Pocket Multi-tool
Nah, you need the 141 function swiss army knife. As we used to say, "Engineering rule #23: Just because you can doesn't mean you should."
Is that a knife in your pocket or are you happy to see me?

Re: An original Pocket Multi-tool
This is probably not the place to post this but since I seen what Kmealy has on the bottom of his post I couldn't resist.
Back when I was a young soldier, we had inspections on Saturday morning to see if you got passes for the rest of the week end.
One Saturday, we had an in ranks khaki inspection with weapons. I was running late when I came out of the mess hall I did not have time to run back to the barracks to drop off the banana I had snatched on the way out. I had to double time to get in the formation. I thought of stuffing the banana in my shirt but thought it would look strange there, so I stuck it in my front pocket.
The inspecting officer came down the ranks, snatching weapons out of the soldiers hands and conducting an inspection, while asking several questions like the serial number of the weapon, the windage and general orders.
When he stepped in front of me, I brought my weapon to a crisp inspection arms and stood at attention. He looked me up and down, then I seen his face change. He looked back at me and stepped on to the next man.
Maybe he thought I was glad to see him.
I caught hell from the 1ST Sgt later, and no pass that week end.

Re: An original Pocket Multi-tool
Yes, I did some research on it. It was made for many years and with a few different configurations. Some of them went to WWII signal corps techs who would use them to wire up communication cables. Apparently, when the war ended, they had a ton of blanks in process inventory so kept making them.Herb Stoops wrote: ↑Mon Nov 30, 2020 10:40 pm Yeah, Keith, I think they used to call that the Electricians knife, they could strip insulation and the screw driver tip to loosen screws in boxes. Re: An original Pocket Multi-tool
I should have bought one when available, now it's discontinued. What's $9000 for a knife? It'd be worth twice that now

Re: An original Pocket Multi-tool
Bushwhacker, your anecdote reminds me of a story about the British Special Air Services (SAS). As part of a toughening programme, the training platoon was taken up to the Scottish Highlands for winter training. After a few days of gale-force winds and snow, the platoon was formed up stark naked for inspection. The inspecting officer arrived, and the sergeant major brought the platoon smartly to attention. Although the men were blue with cold, nobody was about to admit it, and everybody suppressed their shivering.
The officer walked along the front rank, and fetched a recruit a wallop across the face. "Did that hurt?" he demanded. "No Sir!" bellowed back the recruit. "Why not?" "Because I'm in the SAS, Sir!" Satisfied, the officer moved on, and punched the next man in the guts. Same questions, same answers. The officer went on to the third man, and stomped down on the man's bare and blue feet, with his heavy-soled combat boot. Same questions, same answers.
As he turned to the next man, he spied a stiffy sticking out. Without further ado, he brought his swagger stick down on it with an almighty whack. "Did that hurt?" "No Sir!" "Why not?" "Belongs to the man behind me Sir!"
