Here is a vintage hammer with the claws that wrap around the handle.

Looks like something that was made out of necessity.
I can see some guy thinking... "Now if I had some thing on the other side of the nail putter inner to remove old or bent nails...hmmmmm".
And from that, We all have EastWings hanging on our tool walls.

Merry Christmas Herb.

Either that is really old or fairly old and home made at a small forge. I would guess that the claw is made like that to make it stronger which is why I think old. Metallurgy has come a long way in 75 to 100 years. With the metal they had to work with way back the modern style claw would probably have been a little on the fragile side. There is a fair sized opening near the handle for the nail heads to slip through but I'm curious how much head needed to be sticking out of the board to get the claw under it?

Appears to me a little weak where the wooden handle slims down for the steel band too. Heres the info on it,on sale for Christmas.

I never would have guessed that to be only 4 ounces. That makes it a tack hammer which makes the wrap around claw odd as it is way too thick to get under the head of a tack after it's been driven in a bit. I wonder if it was meant to start tacks instead?

David, this one also might be an EastWing forerunner:

It's a cordless framing nailer...batteries not included...no assembly required.
