I finally got around to insulating the garage doors couple of days ago...

I had a choice...fiberglass (like wall insulation) or polysterene panels. Panels are available sized to fit the 22x54 with relief cuts in the back side to facilitate bending into the channels of the garage door panels (both options were rated at R-8). I also found some 2" 4x8 panels (R-13) that I would need to cut up and make my own relief cuts.

All of the insulating I looked at was R-8...There are others rated at R-2.9 and R-4.8, etc.

I decided on the fiberglass because it seemed easy enough for this "one-arm paper hanger" to install. The 4x8 sheets would need to be handled and cut, etc which is tough for me with my shoulder.

So up went the fiberglass, easy enough to do with one arm. I also cut strips on the bandsaw and wedged them in the channels to hold the insulation in. The stick-on buttons that came with the kit were just too much to deal with and they didn't provide enough anyway.

Here's a pic of one of the doors...the other one is just like it.

Always a good idea to insulate,there is a lot of area for heat to bleed off. Now we can call you the one armed insulator, among other things.

Nice job, particularly one handed - I feel for you, still remember how frustrated I was recovering from rotator cuff surgery although fortunately mine was the left shoulder so not quite as bad as I don't think I can hot my mouth with a spoon left-handed. Any plans to add some type of protective layer over the insulation to prevent damage? I had an insulated door installed years ago, been very happy with it, although it doesn't really fit as tight to the inside wall as I think it should. I'd looked at the hinges they sell to correct that problem but cringed a little when I looked at the price. I did see this DIY solution, seemed like it might be a good idea - as long as you don't have an automatic door opener and a poor memory.

HEh,heh, I unplugged my opener and plug it in after I clear everything away leaning against the door, mine too is a factory insulated with a thin metal face inside.

You must have been a fortune teller or psychic in a previous life...LOL...I already put a small tear in one of the fiberglass panels. Nothing a bit of shrink-wrap tape won't fix.

I think I'll give the tear a name...as a reminder..."Tom" sounds right...

I did notice the same thing while I was putting the insulation up. Sometimes the brackets holding the vertical rails are adjustable...mine are not. I like the DIY idea you posted...thanks

BTW...Clopay makes offset hinges for garage doors just for that issue...not very expensive...Home Depot...

Maybe use some sort of heavy Aluminum foil tacked over the insulation.

Not a bad idea but the real solution is to keep me away from the doors. This first tear I did moving a 2x4x8 and trying to handle it like a cheerleader...

I was looking at something along the lines of this, where the spring actually holds/pushes the door against the face. Garage Door Hinge with Spring
