Finally updated the physical plant

Since moving into my current shop I've used oil based electric radiant heaters in the winter. While they did work reasonably well an energy audit showed them to be very spendy to run. That plus space considerations and the fact that although they were thermostatically controlled the shop was either a boiler room or comfortable on entry depending on outside temperature. I am pleased to say that I was finally able to convince the keeper of the purse to spring for an upgrade. A Mitsubishi mini-split was added 2 days ago and the performance is superb.
I'll advise in a few months how the power bill changes but I do expect savings.
Now to reconfigure all the shelving that was on that wall. What a price to pay, eh.

Does that require an outside unit, Jon? Dis you install or did you have an installer?

Yes it has an outside unit, that is the piece shown in the second photo. I decided to have it installed to establish the warranty and cover the permits.I reviewed the possibilities with a good friend who is licensed electrician and followed his recommendation.

Don't the lines going from the inside unit to the outside unit have to be evacuated and then filled with refrigerant? I saw a unit being installed on This Old House a month or two ago and they recommended that it be installed by professionals too.

Yes the lines needed to be evacuated and filled. I looked at the prices just for the unit and then started reviewing all the required parts, permits etc. The installed price was the only way to go or at least it was for me.

I agree on something like that. It is out of my realm of expertise. Good for you having that installed, you will be happy with it, I am sure. Does that heat and cool? Was it a 1 day install?

Herb, it does provide both heating and cooling. The big issue is of course the heating side. It took the "team" electrician and hivac about 4 hours to complete the install. I continue to be pleased with the heating side. Stay tuned for the AC bit, perhaps in August.
