Beware cheap mortise chisels

I just got this email from Farmertec that has some cheap mortise chisel and bit sets for a power mortiser or drill press attachment. https://www.farmertec.com/1-4-5-16-3-8- ... nt=HZ30575

I just checked the size of the socket that the end of the chisels fit into on the yoke that attaches to my DP quill and they won't fit it. The Delta mortising attachment that I have has a 16mm socket and the Farmertec chisels have a 19mm end. They may fit a dedicated mortiser but they probably won't fit any of the DP attachments. Since Farmertec just started selling these I expect they'll start turning up in other places too.

If those are good enough to stay sharp, they can have round handles turned on the lathe and used as a hand chisel for mortising.
Drill holes with a doweling jig and clean the spots between the holes with the mortising chisel.

I considered that too Herb. Use the bit and chisel separately.

No but I expect to see them show up there and on ebay. This outfit specializes in after market chainsaw and small engine repair parts plus chain, bars, and files. They appear to be branching out.

I did a test order and they are $15.61 for a 1" diam, and $15.30 to ship , then I looked up the same one made in Austria and it was $166. I didn't order either one, I was just checking to see what shipping was.

Their shipping has gone up since I first ordered some saw parts and maybe it's a different carrier too. You do get your order in a reasonable amount of time unlike some of the ebay stuff that comes on the proverbial slow boat from China. When I first saw these I thought it might be nice to have a 3/4" one. My DP set only goes to 1/2" so anything bigger than that requires two passes which never gives a really good result. I'm still thinking about your idea to put a handle on it. A piece of 3/4" ID pipe would work well. A while back I had to replace my 1/4" set because the bit broke and one I got off ebay which came in a box that looked identical to the original Delta one was $14 something so no savings there when shipping is added but maybe if you were ordering extra stuff maybe you'd make out cheaper overall. I was thinking of ordering some of the metric sized drill bits. I find that I'm increasingly needing bits in metric sizes and they still are impossible to find here.

I was thinking of getting a 1" for a corner chisel when rabbeting the bottoms of boxes with the router it makes a round corner as it goes around. I have the short one that is about 1/2" square for door butt mortises, I think I will just stay with that.

One of these? : https://www.amazon.com/hinge-corner-chi ... ner+chisel I've seen them for under $10 at times. They are all you need for shallow corners or shallow mortises. If you wanted to go deep though the mortise chisel would work better.

Yeah, that is the type I have, and just the short chisel piece to it works for small work.
