Do you know the dimensions Herb? Is it narrow as it appears or just exceptionally long?

Yeah, it has 2 thumb bolts to tighten the blade, a thumb nut on the goose neck to raise and lower the blade and another thumb bolt to adjust the angle of the blade back near the grip. And it looks like there is a thumb wheel on the rod that goes to the goose neck to give fine adjustment to the height of the blade.

I can't figure out what the cow catcher would be for either. The top one of the two must be French. The words translate as "better made assigned" which makes the phrase idiomatic or the word attribue (with an acute accent on the e) has more than one meaning.

I wonder if that is the original version. It looks little more plain than the ones I see on ebay, etc.
That one compass plane is sure a beauty but then so are a bunch of the others.

I bought a double spokeshave a few years ago on ebay. I've been trying to figure out who made it for quite a while. I thought maybe it was a Stanley but the only one I've found made by them was the # 60 which is different. I finally stumbled across the maker today and it's Asahel G. Bachelder (he also spelled his name Batchelder) of Lowell, Massachusetts. He only made them for about a 20 year period from the late 1840s to the late 1860s which makes it about 150 years old. It's a handy little tool and probably was made for making spokes for wagon wheels. Working slightly off center does feel a bit unnatural though but that might be something you get used to.

I never seen one like that, a curved and a straight in the same spoke shave, really a unique find.

I can't remember seeing one that was virtually all brass. The wood looks like rosewood. Both the lever cap and the end of the blade look quite thick which would make them more comfortable to push on.

The thickness of all the parts make it appear quite hefty, which would be a pleasure to use.

It looks like maybe a homemade one, but it is pretty the way they laminated up the wood.

Plus all the hand carving. The depth control would take a little practice as it appears to be just a band clamp on the iron. With something as pretty as that you would make every effort to make it work. There is a correlation between beauty, useability, and satisfaction. I.E. if it is beautiful and usable it tends to give the user far more satisfaction than a tool that is ugly but still functional.

I had a good day at an auction this past Saturday and got 6 new planes plus a bunch of other goodies for $25 plus tax and fees. All are rusty but restorable. One interesting one was the Stanley 130 model. I had never seen one before. It's a low angle, bevel up, block plane but unlike the Stanley 110, which is a near relative to it, the 130 has two mouths. One is the same as all their other block planes about 1/3 of the way back from the nose. The other mouth is at the very back about 3/8" from the end, to be used like a bullnose plane. According to some info I read it wasn't uncommon to find these planes with the rear apron cut off so that it could plane right tight into a corner. What passes for a frog is cast so that the blade can be mounted in either direction.
This plane is neither rare nor valuable as Jim Bode sells them for anywhere between $30 and maybe up to $90 depending on condition. Still they are interesting and I gave the bullnose configuration a try and it works pretty good even without me resharpening and doing any tuning to the plane.

A few years ago I bought a plane off ebay. It was in good shape except the the tote and knob needed refinishing. The iron has a logo on it but I was never able to make out what it said. Yesterday I decided to try and polish it up a bit more and with good light and a jeweler's loupe I was finally able to make out "Mechanic's Pride". I had never heard of them before so I tried looking them up.
The only hit I got was an antique hedge clipper on ebay but it listed it as Mechanic's Pride and made by Komins Brothers. So I tried Komins Brothers and the only hit I got from that was also on ebay, someone trying to sell some pages of correspondence from Komins Brothers to a firm in Massachusetts. Luckily the correspondence had their logo on it and the logo matches what is on the plane iron. Komins Brothers were located in Philadelphia but that is as much as I could find out. The date on the correspondence was 1927.
I'm wondering if anyone has sources of info for old tools that might have some info on that company. They were makers of "tools, cutlery, and hardware" according to their logo. It's a pretty nice plane. At 13 1/2" it would be equivalent to a 4 1/2 or 5 Stanley. It has a corrugated bottom. I used it yesterday to smooth up a couple of boards that were too long to get onto my jointer. As the one photo shows, it will make shavings.
