More Spindles

Maybe there is a calling for recreating spindles. Another friend needed a spindle so I made him a couple to choose one from. One is Maple and the other is Oak. Need to get them in the mail to him. Left the ends on again. They make nice handles when finishing.

I gather you're leaving the finishing to him? The originals do break occasionally and need to be replaced and there aren't many places where you can get something like that done.

Yes. I'm on the------- "I hate finishing list".

Good looking spindles, nicely done
The best way to sand and finish them get someone else to do it!

WOW, those are good looking spindles, which reminds me I have an old barstool that needs to be fixed. it is made out of some of that Asian wood that they made a ton of furniture out of back in the mid 90's.

I did a good job turning them. The good job would turn bad if I finished them. I am not a stain and finish kind of guy.
My guess is that clear shellac on the Oak spindle and amber shellac on the Maple might do it.

The Asian wood is what this one is. It is like there is no growth rings like it has a continuous growth cycle and no definition year to year.

You're probably right about the shellac. I bought some flakes from LV and tried it on a couple of things. I couldn't get it to look very even but I kept a rag damp with methanol and kept rubbing and it finally looked alright. I haven't done it enough times to find out if there is a learning curve to it. With most things there is.
