New Half Apple Boxes For My Photo Studio

#1

Post by CharleyL »

Well, I made two sets of Apple Boxes last year, so today I started a similar project. Half Apple Boxes. The name was coined by the early movie industry, but now referred to by both photographers and videographers as "Apple Boxes". The
full size are just wooden platforms 12" X 20" and a set contains an 8", 4", 2", and 1" high platforms. Just boxes with hand holes, but no lids. They have no openings, other than the hand holes in the ends, but are very strong and used to raise camera tripods, people, photographer, etc. by stacking the desired combination to achieve any height needed between 1" and 15".

Today I started making Half Apple Boxes. These will be in the same heights, but half size width and length. Well, actually I decided to make them 12" X 12" instead of 12" X 10", so a little bigger than half of the full size set. They are being made from scrap pieces of Baltic Birch. I only had sufficient material to make both the tops, bottoms, and sides completely from 12 mm (1/2") where the larger used 6 mm for the sides and 12 mm for the tops and bottoms. They held up my Jeep Grand Cherokee, so these should be even stronger with the thicker sides. All, but the 1" thick will have partitions in them to transfer the loads through them from top to bottom, so I'll be doing the same with these. This afternoon (about 3 hours) I pre-cut all of the pieces except for the partitions, and box jointed all of the ends. If I get time tomorrow, I will be rough sanding all of the pieces and cleaning up the splintered edges, then beginning the glue-up.

I've had some problems with my eyes due to a change in medications, so no progress at all on the 1/2 Apple Boxes. Before these eye problems, I was already scheduled to have eye surgery (cataract) in my left eye this coming Monday. As a result of the medication problems I am letting my eyes and body recover from this medication problem to be reday for the upcoming surgery. The second eye will be worked on sometime near the end of June, so probably no further progress on these until July. We'll see how things progress.

You will like the results of the cataract surgery, I had both eyes done ,not at the same time, and one has a distance lense and the other a close up. They work good together, I can't tell that they are different. except I have to wear glass for the computer, and those are adjusted accordingly. The reason I did that was that at the time I enjoyed going to the range and shooting my rifles. I was used to shooting without my glasses looking through a scope. I always carry reading glasses though the fine print on some of the items is a little blurry, but other wise I don't need glasses to drive.

Charley,

I’ve had both mine done a week apart at the end of 2020. I wore glasses for 40 years after a car accident and astigmatism issues, but now only need them for reading. Great to be able to get a pair of wrap around sunnies to hide behind.

After five months I developed what is commonly know as secondary cataracts, in my left eye. It was like looking through a frosted glass window. The right eye upon examination was just starting in one lower corner. The specialist hit both of them with a laser and back to perfect sight instantly. The secondary cataracts can not grow back after this procedure. Specialist said that it is a known issue after cataract surgery but normally takes years not months to develop.

Ross, that is good to know, I have never heard of that before. If I start seeing foggyness I will be sure to get them checked again.

I wore glasses for many years. Then at the urging of my VA doc, I had a specialist check them and he said i had bad cataracts and would need to have them removed. I had them done a couple of weeks apart at the VA in Houston. I was awake though the whole thing, could hear the surgeons talking and seen the dark things doing something to my eyes.
I am now with one eye at 20/20 and the other at 20/40. No more glasses except for sun glasses, I wear them any time I am out in the bright sun light. I can rean and do my cross words with out glasses now.
My understanding is that we will all get cataracts at some point in our lives. AS we get older the need becomes more of a priority.
I am glad I had it done.
My drivers license says I must wear then while driving but I don't have any glasses these days to wear. I don't have to renew for a few more years. I guess I could just go to the DMV and update them .
Just something else I will put off until tomorrow.

My drivers license said the same. The specialist gave me a letter that I passed onto the Department of Transport and the requirement was removed.

I never had that on my license, so I can't do that. when I move here where I am at now, I notified them of my new address and the license still had a couple of years on it and they sent my a new license with the full 7 years on it.
