How are the democratic’s suppose to support millions of illegal immigrants coming into your sanctuary cities , if they have to help the people that actually contributed and defended your once great country ?

Re: FO'd Again...
Stick, not sure this is the appropriate thread to ask: I recently watched a YouTube talk by a guy who wrote a book claiming that McNamara relaxed the IQ requirements for draftees, such that that 3540000 guys with IQs below the normal range were drafted over three years, and sent to combat units in Vietnam.
Some did surprising duty, while many had no clue where they were or how to stay alive, and had three times the mortality rate of other troops.
They had a demeaning nickname.
Is this for real?

Re: FO'd Again...
The draft board had nothing to do with the intelligence levels of draftees. Everyone eligible was drafted if they did not voluntarily join. It was the induction center that made the determination of where these soldiers were to be assigned or if due to valid reasons were not allowed to serve. These may have been reasons presented by the draftee or due to the results of their initial placement testing both mental and physical reasons. The scores of the testing were used to place you in a Military occupation specialty (MOS) . afterwards ALL soldiers were instructed the same. It was this initial training (Basic Training) that determined if the inductee would be retained in the service or not.
From that initial testing, Your score was matched to a list of military jobs (MOS) that fell within those brackets of your scores and based on the shortages or needs of those jobs you were given a choice of specialties to follow . This was determined back in the induction centers or the requitement offices.
By lowering the standards of eligibility to serve, this would have given you more options of a higher job placement.
In combat for every combat soldier, it takes 7 in support of that soldier. Some of these support soldiers were in country and some were in other locations around the world. hence the term "Vietnam Era soldiers".

you were a recruiter???...
what you said was the SOP that seemed that was never followed...
on the same token the spoiled college educated brats were often a lot worse, dangerous to everyone around them, especially the gung ho butter bars who thought they knew what they were doing, incompetent at their job(s), couldn't be told otherwise, thought the enlisted were their servants because they were better than everyone else or............

Re: FO'd Again...
@Bushwhacker , what I understood from the talk was that people who would previously have been rejected on grounds of low IQ, were accepted at the induction centers under the new policy. The guy talks about people with an IQ of 50, and some that did not know how to tie bootlaces - they had to be taught. Training officers tried to get them disqualified, and combat unit officers tried to find them non-combat roles, while still being under-strength although technically fully-manned.
I take your point about the large number of support personnel required, but how many people can you have on KP, and what is the minimum requirement for those people not to affect the health of your frontline troops? As mentioned, there were some who exceeded expectations.
Part of my job is to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. I regularly have to write reports advising the appointment of a curator bonis or curator ad litem for people in that category of cognitive ability: able to perform simple tasks unsupervised, or moderately complex tasks under supervision, but unable to manage their own affairs, or participate in their own legal defense. So while I believe in inclusivity and diversity, and believe each person’s case should be judged on its merits, I would not be able to accept a policy churning out cannon fodder.
When I served as battalion medical officer in a combat unit, I had the discretion to remove people who were mentally or physically unfit, from the operational area. We had guys who had gone to some length to get into the unit (not conscripts like myself), and I regularly gave the OC a piece of my mind for bringing them along, before sending them home.
Interestingly, in our case, the OC was not following a policy, but rather a tradition stemming from the Anglo-Boer Wars, in which the Boers were largely volunteers, and entire families of men used to go to fight the Brits, including those today classified as “special-needs”. What worked in guerilla formations, does not necessarily work in a regular army.
Parenthetically, some 50 000 Boers tied down a British Army of 400 000, and only surrendered when the Brits introduced concentration camps for women and children, and a “scorched earth” policy on the farms and livestock of the Boers.

Re: FO'd Again...
I got my first draft physical notice in 1969. Just about every male had to go and be assessed. I had torn an ACL the year before and had doctors papers. You still had to go through the entire battery of tests the first time through. I failed at the end where their doctor reviewed my paperwork and pulled on my bad knee to see how much slack was in it. Then a follow up physical 6 months later to see if anything had changed. That one only took about an hour. I recall on the first one I think two guys who were trying to join the marines. Probably their best life options at the time. The IQ test they were given was something akin to flash cards. I'm guessing they didn't read or write much or at all. I recall overhearing a conversation between the guys doing the testing that they were going to have to "help them out some" as the scores were so low that they weren't going to pass otherwise.Biagio wrote: Wed Dec 28, 2022 7:20 pm Stick, not sure this is the appropriate thread to ask: I recently watched a YouTube talk by a guy who wrote a book claiming that McNamara relaxed the IQ requirements for draftees, such that that 3540000 guys with IQs below the normal range were drafted over three years, and sent to combat units in Vietnam.

There were some funny moments during the physical. One test had us in a room with 10 urinals and we were handed a cup to pee in. The guy next to me was grunting and groaning but nothing was happening. He looked at the guy on the other side and asked him if he could help out. The guy said sure, no problem and filled his cup too. We passed a doorway with a half door and sat our cups down where a tech dipped in litmus paper testing for diabetes I think. The guy who filled the extra cup went through and the tech tested his pee and then told him to get out of line and wait. Then the guy who couldn't produce a sample went through and he was told to wait. The rest of us went through and kept going. Turns out the good samaritan had diabetes and didn't know it.
Another room had us sitting and giving a blood sample. I was first and the tech had trouble finding a vein. He went in, out, and sideways a couple times before he hit it. I'm not the least bit squeamish but several of the other guys were. They turned very pale and I thought one or two were going to slide off the bench and hit the floor.

Re: FO'd Again...
When I had my Army physical in 1961, the navy corpsman gave me an eye test, had me hold a file card over one eye and read the chart, which I did. then switched eyes and read the chart. He didn't like the way I held the card, so grabbed it and poked the corner into my eye. The eye watered and I couldn't read the chart, so he marked down ,"Blind in one eye". I went thru with a "B" profile, and tried to get that off my record, but never could. I took several eye tests and my CO wanted to court martial me for lieing on my physical, and sent me to get another eye test that came back OK.

I only was held in 3 more months because of the Cuban missile Crises and I thought that was bad at the time. I still had 3 years of inactive reserve to serve, but there were guys that had been released 1 year before in my unit called back and were serving when I got out.

I was stationed in France at that time and still had a year to go on my first 3 year enlistment, so was not affected by that. Besides, I took another 3 years in 1963 and that was the beginning of my 22 years of service. I have never looked back at my years of service in any way but positive. I loved the Infantry.

I salute you,you and your units are what make the USArmy the greatest. I have not regrets either and am proud that I served. I was always treated fairly by my CO's and if I didn't have other plans, I would have stayed. I did try for Helicopter pilot training but got turned down because I had fillings in my teeth. And years later I found out the life span of a Chopper pilot in vietnam was under 45 min.
Herb
" A total of 5,086 helicopters were destroyed – a loss rate of 42 per cent. Many of the rest were damaged in action. More than 40,000 helicopter pilots and 60,000 crew members served in Vietnam. During the war, 2,165 pilots and 2,712 crew were killed. Many more were wounded."
