Candy Bowls w/Lids

#1

Post by HandyDan »

Finished up the Christmas goodies today. I made some lidded bowls and mounted ceramic ducks on the lids. I've had these ducks for years and this year decided to use them. The lids are brass made from some salvaged door kick plates. I used my metal lathe to turn the brass sheet into round discs after roughing them out at the band saw in the metal shop. The lids are roughly 5 1/2". The lathe is a 6" max so rough cut had to be under the 6" limit. I had nine ducks ergo there are nine bowls. Black Walnut and Cherry are the wood species.

Handydan is not even close to your creative abilities. What was the original plan for the ducks?

Two questions:
1. Did you use a corm or friction-fit chuck to hold the bowls, in order to turn the under-side recess?

2. Might I ask how you clamp the brass sheet in your lathe in order to turn a disk?

Thank You.

I made this candle, years ago, in the same fashion and intended to do more of them to sell at a friends store but she went out of business. Had a nice piece of walnut so did these bowls for Christmas gifts instead.

I used Cole Jaws on a chuck to hold the bowls to do the underside. Cole Jaws have always worked well for me. I am able to make special hold pins when necessary on the metal lathe and then dip them in the plastic coat like used for plier handles. For the brass I used Turner's Tape, double stick tape from Hartville Hardware, on a 4" faceplate to hold the brass for turning. Used some moderate cuts and never even came close to losing it. Stayed stuck nicely.

Thanks for the explanation.
Don’t know where corm came from in spellcheck - I meant Cole.

Somehow I imagined that you used two identical wooden disks, with the brass sandwiched between them - but my experience is limited to a wood lathe.

Have you any experience of that New Zealand system of cutting nesting bowls out of a piece of expensive wood?

I don’t have the tools, have never used them, don’t know anybody who has, hence my query. I reckon if anybody could make them pay for themselves, it would be somebody like Handydan, who makes multiples of many things, including bowls.
The tools are available in South Africa on and off, but at absurd prices. I doubt I will live long enough to get to use them (I think I have only used the Cole jaws for my Nova chuck a couple of times), otherwise I would get friends to bring a set out from NZ.

Interesting how NZ has pretty much cornered the market in woodturning innovation. Population just over 5 million, to which we are contributing large numbers these days.

I do not. I don't usually turn bowls. Most of those coring tools require a larger higher power lathe than what I have. I do the majority of my wood turning on my Delta 46-460 midi lathe. Bowls do waste away a lot of wood.
