I ordered a book that contains instruction on making a gig and the cutting out of the pieces plus patterns of the pieces.
I'll post how this goes.

Nah; it went to my Grandson (8 yrs.old) for a B-Day present, after the challenge. He actually does know how to play.

I'll see if I can finds some pics. Basically I ripped 3/8"x 3 1/2 x 8' strips and then glued up two large panels for the top and bottom. The sides were single pieces of the 3 1/2" strips. The length and width are from the chess board dimension of 8-2" squares in both directions.
(The pics are on a different computer.)

Oh; I mitred the box sides and drilled 1/8" holes in both directions and dowelled them with 1/8"dowel.
I also dadoed (3/16") the sides along the top and bottom to accept the two panels, which had the edges rebated to slip into the grooves.

Those dark chess pieces are stained, not a different wood species.

OK; different box but same style and build...
The box is filled with KAPLA blocks (that's why it looks full).

They're a lot of fun for the kids; they love building stuff with them. My grandsons have two complete sets plus a couple of smaller commercially made sets...maybe 500 pieces in total.

We had tinkertoys and those building blocks that looked like little bricks.Also lincoln logs. My dad made a ton of square shaped logs like the round Lincoln logs
My kids had Leggos.

It is funny the different toys that each generation comes up with, the kids now have a bunch of stupid games, with the exception of Zoob BuilderZ, and Great Gears, Still have the Tea Sets for girls though.
My kids went through the digital age and understand electronics way better than I do. We went through a Mechanical Age because of the war and people were needed to build war machines.

All these assembly type 'toys' are invaluable for building hand eye co-ordination and subtly teaching spatial relations and physics principles. That's why girls need to play with this stuff more. The boys, not so much with the tea party BS.

One of my nephews still talks about how when i got back from Vietnam, I visited them and he and I got on the floor and spent the day playing with tinker toys. He is in his 60s today.

When I retired from the Army, I got a job as an apprentice Carpenter, (Union Job), then began to build houses.
You learn a lot that will be helpful for all of your life building houses.
