So this will get mixed responses, but it looked interesting for a number of reasons:

Re: Duct collection hack
You'll know if it's not working by the sound of screws hitting the impeller in the DC.

Re: Duct collection hack
Most of the new systems are designed to draw the air out of the top of the cyclone so all of the heavy stuff falls into the dust bin before the fan. Kind of like the Dust Deputy does. I have sucked up rags and plastic and even a can of 3 & 1 oil, along with small chunks of wood, and they ended up in the dust bin. My first DC system was like Chuck mentioned and I got a few pings over the years.

Re: Duct collection hack
Herb is correct and every system should have a cyclone in it as it reduces the need to take bags off which is a PITA and is better for filtration by giving it a lot less to do. I'm lucky to have finally been able to install a wood heater in my shop so all my floor sweepings go in it and the ashes go out on the lawn later.

Re: Duct collection hack
Cool idea, but in my opinion, the placement of the magnet is wrong. Also, something like this is made to suck up what you sweep to avoid the dustpan, rather than to run through an elaborate dust collection system.. Make one of these, and attach to a covered 55 gal garbage can. (It's for those of us who don't have an $2,000 dust collection system.) Needless to say, no impeller, sparks, or fire.
