Garage door opener for roll up doors

#1

Post by roxanne562001 »

I few years ago I put up a steel 26 X 24 garage. I like the building allot but it came with steel roll up doors. I have been searching for a garage door opener solution. I called all over everyone wanted a boatload of money for a garage door opener. I stumbled upon this youtube video with someone having the same problem. They solved it with a simple and reasonably priced solution.Rollup garage door opener solution I am in the process of doing the same thing. I thought I would share in case anyone else has this same issue. I will try to post a video once mine is completed.

Will you be able to do a remote switch from outside? Does that have limit switches to shut it off at the top and bottom? How did they open before with a manual pull chain ? Very clever fix.

Yes it does have electronic limit switches on the opener which are adjustable. The roll up door just has springs in the drum you manually roll it up by pushing up then you pull it down with a rope. I may have to put an antenna outside if the RF is restricted by the metal building. I will see after it is installed. My son is going to help me when he has a few days off

Whatever you put across the bottom of the door will need reinforced as he showed if you mount it to the stiffener strut as he did. I would put that on first and make sure the door goes up and down easily when you lift from the side the opener is being installed on. Even though you are putting something all the way across the door bottom a large percentage of the lifting force will be applied to that side of the door and the other side will just follow because it has to. It is imperative the door works smoothly or it will jam.

I got a quote from them it was much higher than the price advertised after shipping. Plus my son had a used 1/2 hp door opener laying around so that was free. I am planning on using 1" square tubing across the bottom of the door I have all kinds of it around here so basically all I will have invested is a little work

attach the drive directly to the end of the door via belt drive...
make a mount for the drive and put it on the door...
use drive reduction to increase torque...

If pulling up on one side tends to jam the door then another option might be to run light weight aircraft cable to both sides via a pulley and wind the cable up on a pipe section. The size of the pipe would determine the torque.
