Alternate Clamping...

sumbuddy decided to use a chair as a step stool and as a result a few of the spindles were broken off at the mortise... the chair was made using pocket screws everywhere to include the M&T joints... the screws used were flat-heads that had split the ends of the spindles to start w/...
I used WeldBond to glue the shards back together but clamping then became an issue..
tape didn't give me the uniform pressures needed to make the ends true round...

enter shrink tube..
but...
the WeldBond squeeze out firmly cemented the tube to the spindle... it was a project all in it's own to get the tube off the spindle...
for the next round I painted the inside of he shrink tube w/ a light coating of vegetable oil... it worked...
I got uniform clamping making the end of the spindle round again......
the oil kept the WB adhesive from bonding to the shrink tube..
the oil residue washed right off and squeeze out cleaned up a lot easier...

Notes:
I considered Vaseline.. too heavy and clean up might generate issues...
mineral oil.. didn't have any...
olive oil.. thought it to be too heavy..
the heat used to shrink the tube, I think, sped up the adhesive set time...
use a Q tip to paint the inside of the shrink tube...

Hopefully, that "sumbody" was a neighbor & NOT you.
With all of your craftsman skills I can't envision you having a M&T with screws in your house.

I didn't build the chairs..
these ladder back chairs were put together w/ pocket holes.. no glue and the screws were flat heads..

this was the ends of the spindles I was repairing...
I used a heat gun and not flame on/with this specific tube......

Since the oil worked it was probably the easiest method to use. I was thinking surgical tube and not shrink tube. Surgical tube is also a clamping method that can work in otherwise difficult to clamp situations. I've also used ratchet straps to re-glue the stretchers in the legs. One wrap around the stretcher with the strap will keep the strap from riding up the leg as you tighten
