Need a consensus of opinion!

HonestJohn and I were talking about my new AvidCNC coming in a few weeks. One subject that we were talking about is the lubrication of the rails, installing grease fittings, etc.

John mentioned that some of the folks use silicone spray in the place of grease which collects sawdust, dirt and grime. It would take more frequent lubrication, but what do you folks think about that option versus lithium grease?

If there are lubricants that are dry film, I would assume something like a teflon with a binder etc. would be better. Where does one find the "best" type of lubricant. I know about the silicone type lubricants. I avoided that (and WD40 which is nothing more than kerosine) when I finished my table saw, jointer, etc.

Is there a brand or type that is the "best fit" for the CNC?

PS, I am still on hurricane restoration duty, but this last hurricane did a lot of damage, but it isn't as bad as Laura was. Gives me a chance to check on here between the inquiries etc.

Okay, what do you guys thing about this? I've searched on the Big A and this is about the best that i can find, no silicone, uses Teflon.

I ordered a can and will see how well it works. Since the machine is new, I can coat the rails well and we will see how it goes.

WD makes a dry lube now too. Don't know if it's any good or not.

I ordered a larger can of the DuPont stuff and will try it. I asked if I could cancel the one from CNCRouterParts.

I'm using Slipit paste for woodworking on the TS at the moment.
Goes on like a jelly
wipe it off.
Doesn't appear to have affected anything so far.

Time will test it's longevity.

I'm thinking that before I install the rack and pinion parts, I take it out and spray it down really good with the DuPont Teflon spray, as above, then install. That will give me a good coating without the potential of overspray onto the other things.

If anyone thinks differently, I certainly welcome your advice, opinion, thoughts on the subject. I just hate to get old fashioned grease on everything but want to protect and keep the machine lubricated.

Okay, what's the difference between chlorinated and non-chlorinated brake cleaner besides the obvious, one has chlorine? Is it better not to have chlorine? Probably would be better on my breathing, but is there a difference in effectiveness or chemical interaction with the metal?

Since this is a new installation, I will clean the parts with the brake cleaner, and then put the teflon lubricant on it. I can do all of that before the parts are installed.

I don't use the spray because it gets all over the place and generally leaves a white film where it lands...tough to clean up.

I'm a big fan of Tri-flow...a cue tip and a little dab'll do ya...lasts a long time on whatever you put it on...

Harshest environment I use it in is the boat...throttle and gear levers, steering linkages under the aft deck, slider door wheels...

In the shop on table saw raise and angle threads, scroll saw moving parts, etc...

Applied it on boat parts about three years ago...still loose as a goose...
