I used Maple for these using one stick of wood for the grain match. Separate the ball and hollow it out getting the walls down to about an eighth inch thick and then glue them back together with an overlay? joint making sure the noise balls are installed. The joint is then hidden with the burn lines.

That answers the question of how you hollowed them and got the rattles in. I'm not sure if there is a proper name for that joint either. It could be called a lap joint maybe. One of my uncles used to dress up some of his turnings but putting in grooves and then he would heat up a wire with a torch and use that to burn the grooves.

No need to heat the wire the spinning wood does it for you. Great idea...I think I'd rather put a piece of wire in an empty coping saw or hacksaw frame and one-hand it...not sure I'm coordinated enough to wrap my arm around the lathe... 
Don't piss off old people. The older we get the less "Life in Prison" is a deterrent !

I found these forks at the Restore and put burning wires on them. The may have been meant for lifting a hot turkey. The small one is a cheese cutter. I like the handle.
