My Sister's Bowl

My sister has been wanting a large bowl to make salad in. Came across a piece of what I believe is Cherry. 23 inches of 9.75" by 3" thick. Yielded this bowl 9.50" and I got it 5.5" deep. I finished it using mineral spirits with paraffin wax melted in it. Rubbed it in while it was still hot and when it gelled up I got out the heat gun and kept melting it in to the wood. Gave it to her today with upkeep instructions. She loved it.

That came out really good, Dan. I used to put the melted paraffin wax on my cutting boards. It seals really good and is easy to keep up. the bowl sure looks nice and deep too. She is gonna lova lova that.

Nice, It sure looks like cherry.I had to redo my kids cutting board topped cart. I used a mix of mineral oil and beeswax as per Daninvan's recipe. I also used a heat gun to keep it liquid longer and did lots of rubbing. It smells fairly nice when dry. Honey is naturally anti-microbial. Maybe beeswax is too which would be a plus for anything that will have food touch it.

Yes it was. A Delta 46-460 Midi Lathe. Small but mighty.

I don't have a lathe. Never got into that side of woodwork.
I recently was putting together another cutting board. I took a look at it and added another layer of 3/4 boards to the bottom side, then made a circle jig, which I used to cut out a 12 inch circle in it. I then dropped inside 3/4 of an inch and cut out another circle.
I used my band saw to cut out the outer circle, then routed all the inside out. Making a 12 inch bowl 2" deep and about 3/4 " thick.. Today, (once it cools down this evening) I plan to use a flattening bit to level the inside bottom of the bowl.
I had to make a gig for that since my drill press is not large enough to reach all the way to the center of the bowl.
I will probably varnish it to bring out the colors of the different woods and she will be able to use if for fruit or some thing.
I was making it for a Christmas gift for Sandra until the other day I was running my router in it and sensed some one next to me.
There she stood, waiting for me to turn it off to tell me lunch was ready, and by the way "What cha building?".
Now I have to come up with something else.

I have done that before interrupting my wife when she was wrapping a present to me. She says it is for someone else and I think, what a lucky person. Then when the time comes it is handed to me. When I comment on her giving it to someone else she would say, "Oh, they didn't want it,so I regifted it to you". And then we have a good laugh.

Yes, I started out with no pictures since it was going to be a surprise, but when Sandra surprised me by standing in my shop watching be run my router, we have been taking pictures since. I believe she even made a short video too.
I got all the hand sanding done yesterday
I plan to let her poly it today so I will video that then post all that we have of the build.

I like that. Bowls leave a big mess behind when you're done but a lasting, usable form is created.

I made a gig that screwed into the center of my circle and ran my router around the inside lowering it a 1/4 inch on each pass, and moving the router in 3/4 of an inch for each circle cut out of it.
Then I had to make another gig to rout out the center and to level the bottom inside of the bowl.
I then used my small circular sander with 60 grit to smooth it all out followed with 320 grit.
Yes, it made a mess. I had to vacuum the chips on each pass just to see what I was doing.
I told Sandra that this was my first and last bowl.
She said " No it isn't".
Does she know something that I don't?

Great job. Once you get it down it will become addictive like cutting boards and you will think of other combinations of colors and patterns to make. That also is a good way to use up short pieces of lumber. Also now that you have the setup down pat, it is a shame to just hang the jig on the wall.
