Easter Eggs

I have been making a few eggs for Easter since seeing a video recently as the inspiration. I decided to do mine in colors. Started out trying to make some measurements and a template. Wasn't working out and I figured what the heck, it's just an egg so went and free handed them. Did a little texturing, added some burn lines and got out the Amsterdam ink and colored them. Put on a coat of shellac to finish them up. Here are some of the results. Made a couple bowls for display and figured some grass would help. The plastic grass is wild and untamed. I ended up trimming the excess with scissors.

This is the ink I use for coloring small items. Comes in an array of colors and colors wood nicely.

Thanks Chuck. I have tried various ways of adding colors to turned items over the years and the ink seems to be the answer. It gives great colors quickly and has similar qualities to dyes. It flows well while running on the lathe and leaves no brush marks yet doesn't drip and get flung everywhere as long I regulate the speed.

Speaking of Easter eggs. I had the privilege of escorting my Grand daughter and her 3 small daughters 1.5, 3, .
to an easter egg hunt this last week end. Actually, this was not a hunt at all, all of the plastic eggs were simply laying on the ground for the kids to gather up. None were hidden.
any way Each of us, My grand Daughter, Sandra and I escorted one of the girls as they gathered eggs. I had my 3 year old. The folks in charge, had us line up next to the wall of a building, and on the command of GO ! . we took off like a herd of buffalo. these kids did not miss a single egg, it was as if they were sucked up by a huge vacuum cleaner. I attempted to stay with my Great Garnd daughter who took off with the rest of the herd. When I caught up with her, I noticed that she would run up to an egg, stomp on it and pick up what ever came out of it. Slower then just throwing them into the basket and sorting them out later but very effective, since once in a while, she uncovered a piece of candy that was not chocolate and left it right there next to the busted open plastic egg shell.
I could tell right off that this was not her first rodeo. Some place in her many years (3) she had devised this method of egg gathering.
It was step up to the plastic egg, get your balance, raise the off leg and a quick decisive stomp. Some of them she hit a second and a third time if they did not open right up on the first stomp.
One of the eggs exploded and scattered several tiny wrapped chocolate eggs, other kids attempted to get in on her bonanza, but she warned them off with a "This was my egg." I found myself spreading my arms over her and her busted egg to keep the other hooligans away from "HER EGG".
All in all, a great day. And I upon getting the invite to help with the "Hunt". had tried to find excuses to not have to attend.
She even came up to me after the hunt, gave me a hug and a thank you POP POP and a chocolate egg from her stash.
Can't beat that

That is how they're held in the chuck to turn them. I leave the end on so they can be spun in the lathe while painting the ink on and also a nice coat of clear shellac down as far as the last burn line. I then turn the end off and hold the egg in the chuck to sand and finish the end. A little shellac burnished in with rag completes the end of the egg.

Nice job on those eggs, Dan! One day I'll be turning things like that! Thanks for the info on the ink! I'll have to save the info on the ink.
