Baby Rattle

#1

Post by HandyDan »

Young couple next door just had a baby. I like to give a rattle for newborns and noticed I was out. Spent a couple days making these three out of Hard Maple. My niece recently showed me a video of her baby playing with his. She said it is his favorite because it is the loudest. Never thought I would hear that as they don't sound very loud to me.

Nice job Dan. What makes the rattle. Can you show how they are made?

I have used various items for the rattle balls. I had some ball bearings and used them, tried plastic beads, and found the BB gun ammo to work fine and I have plenty of it. I use a 2"X2"X6" blank and cut 2" off one end. I hollow the 2" piece first and create a stepped joint for a glue joint. I make the female end of the joint here and it is easier to fit the handle end. I then put the handle end in the chuck and pare the end down until the other end fits snug. Now I hollow the handle end add some BBs and glue the halves together. Once the glue dries I shape the rest of the rattle and add the three burn lines to hide the glue joint. I'll see about doing a tutorial.

Soo this is made on a lath? Hadn't thought of that. but would love to see a tutorial of the build.
